இசையா தெனினும் இயற்றியோ ராற்றால்அசையாது நிற்பதாம் ஆண்மை - இசையுங்கால்கண்டால் திரையலைக்கும் கானலந் தண்சேர்ப்பபெண்டிரும் வாழாரோ மற்று.

பொருள்
முயற்சி இசையாது போனாலும், அசையாமல் நிற்பதே ஆண்மை. அலை மணலை அடிக்கும் குளிர்ந்த கடற்கரை நாட்டின் தலைவனே, அந்த முயற்சி இசையும்போது பெண்களும் அங்கே வாழாதிருப்பார்களா?
Meaning
Even when it does not go well, to stand unmoved is manliness. O lord of the cool shore where waves beat the sand, when it does go well, would women not live there too?

பாடல் ஆண்மையை வெற்றியோடு இணைக்கவில்லை. 'இசையாது எனினும்' என்பது முன்னமே முடிவு தெரியாத நிலையைக் குறிக்கிறது. வெற்றி வருமா என்பது முயற்சியாளன் கையில் இல்லை; அசையாமல் நிற்பது அவன் கையில். எனவே ஆண்மை என்பது முடிவின் கணக்கில் அளக்கப்படுவதல்ல, நிலைத்திருப்பதில் அளக்கப்படுகிறது.
இறுதி அடியில் தலைவனை நோக்கி ஒரு கேள்வி எழுகிறது. முயற்சி இசையும் போது அந்நாடு வாழத்தக்கதாகிறது; பெண்கள் அங்கே வாழ்வர். அதாவது வெற்றியின் பயன் தனக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அது ஊரையே தாங்குகிறது. ஆகவே நிலைத்திருப்பது சொந்தப் பெருமை அன்று, பிறருடைய வாழ்வுக்கான ஆதாரம்.
Explanation
The verse does not tie manliness to success. 'Even when it does not go well' names a state in which the outcome is not yet known. Whether victory comes is not in the striver's hands; standing unmoved is. Manliness is therefore not measured by the result but by the standing.
The last line turns to the lord with a question. When the effort does succeed, the land becomes fit to live in and women dwell there. The fruit of success is not his alone — it holds up the whole country. To stand firm, then, is not private pride but the support of other lives.
