The Knowledge of the Council Chamber · Avaiyaridhal

This chapter teaches that before speaking, one must understand the audience, its learning and its mood, and speak accordingly. Valluvar says it is wisdom to speak with depth before the learned, simply before the unlearned, and to keep silent before those unworthy of the word.

Introduction

The Avai Arithal chapter, in the Amaichiyal section of the Kural, says that the power of a word depends on those who hear it. The same word blooms in one assembly and is wasted in another. A good idea placed in the wrong setting becomes useless. So before beginning to speak, the wisdom of knowing what kind of gathering it is, what the hearers know and what mood they are in is called knowing the assembly. It is basic to ministers, teachers, leaders and speakers alike.

The first three verses state the need for this knowledge. The first two urge us to study the assembly and weigh the substance of the speech, and to know the moment and understand well before speaking. The third warns that those who begin to speak without knowing the assembly do not know even the kinds of speech and are good at nothing else. The fourth shows the subtlety of this knowledge: before the learned, be learned; before the unlearned, be plain as white lime.

The fifth verse praises the restraint that does not rush to speak first in an assembly of elders. The sixth says that a failure before people of understanding is like losing one's way and falling. The seventh and eighth speak of the benefit of speaking before the discerning: learning shines there, and it is like watering growing crops. The ninth and tenth show the reverse: one must not speak, even by mistake, before an unworthy assembly, for it is like nectar spilled in a drain.

This understanding is just as necessary today. The way a doctor explains to a patient, a teacher speaks to a small child and to a college student, a leader addresses the team, must differ. In an age when we speak on social media without knowing to whom, Valluvar's warning becomes even more important. To respect the listener and to speak in a way that suits him is the true art of the word.

The chapter is not a call to silence; it asks us to shape speech. It teaches us to let learning shine before the wise, to speak simply before the unlettered, and to stay quiet before those unfit to listen.

Chapter story

Sauti at Naimisharanya

From the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. In the sacred forest of Naimisharanya the sage Shaunaka, head of the community, was conducting a great sacrifice that lasted twelve years. A multitude of sages had gathered there, all learned in the Vedas, practised in austerity and versed in the scriptures. When the day's rites ended, they customarily assembled in the evening to hear stories and converse.

One day a Suta bard called Ugrashravas arrived. He was the son of Lomaharshana of the Suta clan, known as Sauti, and had learned the Mahabharata from a disciple of Vyasa. When he entered the forest the sages welcomed him and made him sit. He did not at once begin to display his learning. He bowed humbly to all and waited.

The sages asked, 'Son of the Suta, from where do you come? What have you seen? What have you heard?' Sauti said that he had heard Vaishampayana, a disciple of Vyasa, recite the Mahabharata at the serpent sacrifice of Janamejaya, and was now visiting many holy places. In the course of his talk he looked at the sages' faces and gauged their eagerness. He sensed that they were people who loved wisdom and sacred stories.

'Sages, what would you like to hear? Tales from the Puranas, the history of kings, or the origin of the world? I shall tell whatever you wish.' With one voice they replied, 'We wish to hear the Mahabharata given by Vyasa. It is the best of histories, which explains dharma. You must tell it.'

Understanding the wish and worth of the assembly, Sauti began the very epic they wanted. He first bowed to Vyasa and Ganapati, then told the gist and the greatness of the story. Since they were scholars, he spoke not only the story but also its deep moral thought. He told it neither like a simple tale to children nor like mere war news in a royal court, but subtly and deeply, as suited sages engaged in sacrifice.

Speech that knew the assembly held the hearers spellbound. It is said that the Mahabharata went on night after night through many days of the sacrifice. The sages rejoiced, and Sauti's name is remembered to this day as the one who gave us the epic. It is a witness that a tale told with knowledge of the listeners' wish and worth lasts beyond time.

He began humbly, bowing to the sages first, which is the first step in knowing an assembly.
