Explanation

Seasoned warriors driving armoured horses, unafraid of the din of battle, leap upon the foreheads of elephants, like great tigers springing from the hills.

The elephant is a sign of strength; the tiger a sign of courage. Here the smaller defeats the larger by daring. The verse says that resolve, more than size, decides the outcome of a battle.

From the Mahabharata (Bhishma Parva)

Bhima Against the Kalinga Host

From the Mahabharata. On the second day of the war, King Shrutayu of Kalinga surrounded Bhima with a great force of elephants. Nishadas and Kalinga warriors attacked from every side. Bhima's chariot horses fell and his chariot was shattered.

But Bhima was not afraid. Taking up his mace, he leapt from the ground into the elephant host. He sprang onto an elephant's forehead, struck down the warrior on it, and leapt on to the next. The Kalinga prince Shakradeva, King Shrutayu and Bhanuman all fell to his mace.

Vyasa describes the scene: among the elephants, Bhima roamed like a lion among a herd of cattle. Hearing his roar, the elephants fled, trampling their own army. Dhrishtadyumna and Satyaki later came to his side.

Bhima, who with his chariot broken and standing alone leapt upon the elephants' foreheads, is the very form of the valour this verse pictures, like tigers springing from the hills.
