Explanation

Beneath white umbrellas fallen to the ground lie elephant trunks cut by unyielding warriors. The round white umbrella looks like the moon and the trunk touching it like a serpent, so the scene resembles a serpent licking the moon.

The simile recalls the old tradition that an eclipse happens when Rahu swallows the moon. The fall of the umbrella, the sign of royal power, is likened to an eclipse that hides the light: the enemy's glory has gone dark.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam (Eighth Canto)

Mohini and Rahu

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. When the gods and demons together churned the ocean of milk, at last Dhanvantari rose holding the pot of nectar. The demons snatched it at once and began quarrelling among themselves.

Then Vishnu appeared as Mohini, a woman of great beauty. Enchanted, the demons handed her the pot: "You share out the nectar." Mohini seated the gods and demons in separate rows and began serving the nectar to the gods alone.

The demon Rahu saw through this, took the form of a god and sat between the Sun and the Moon. The moment the nectar touched his throat, the Sun and Moon pointed him out, and Vishnu at once cut off his head with the discus. But because the nectar had touched it, the head did not die.

The Puranic tradition says that ever since, Rahu bears a grudge against the Sun and Moon who exposed him and from time to time tries to swallow them, and that is an eclipse. Since he is only a head, they come out again.

This story is the Puranic background to the verse's simile of a serpent licking the moon: victory won by deceit does not last.
