Explanation

There is something subtle in the word 'urithaa', 'making me fit'. The true reality is not available to everyone; one must be ready to receive it. But the poet does not claim that he earned this readiness himself. It was Murugan who made him fit and then gave him the teaching. Both the gift and the hand that receives it come from the Lord.

This is a recurring note in Tamil bhakti. Even the longing for God, even the ability to pray, is seen as grace. The devotee's part is to stop resisting.

The second half sings of valour. Tarakan and the Krauncha mountain from verse 4 return. 'Purandharan', one of Indra's names, means 'destroyer of strongholds'; here it is given to Murugan, who broke the asura's fortress to protect the city of the gods. The thread running through the whole book appears again: the teaching that splits delusion within and the vel that splits the mountain of illusion without are one and the same.

Life of Arunagirinathar, Vayalur tradition

The Command at Vayalur

From the tradition of Arunagirinathar. After receiving grace at Thiruvannamalai, Arunagirinathar began to travel. Tradition says that when he reached Vayalur, near Tiruchirappalli, Murugan appeared to him once more.

'Go to all my shrines and sing my Thiruppugazh,' the Lord commanded, and with his vel he marked the poet's tongue again and showed him how to sing. From then on, it is said, Arunagirinathar journeyed across the Tamil land and even to Lanka, pouring out thousands of Thiruppugazh songs, one for shrine after shrine.

The Murugan temple at Vayalur still holds a special place for Arunagirinathar, and devotees remember it as the place where his mission was given. It is the story of a guru who first made his disciple fit, and then gave him his work, just as this verse says.

To reflect on

Think of a good thing you received. How were you made ready for it, and how much of that readiness came from others?
