Explanation

In this verse the hero honours the dignity of women. Riding the madal is a custom for men alone; women do not do so. Even when love is deep as the ocean, a woman keeps her modesty and self-control. He praises that firmness as perunthakka il, meaning no one is more worthy. It is also a graceful way for the hero to humble himself: when he resolved to ride the stalk, he realised in wonder that women endure their pain.

The verse can be read in two ways. Some say it praises the restraint of women as glory. Others say that, since men have the outlet of the madal and women have none, the verse acknowledges the burden of women who bear sorrow silently. In today's view the second reading gains weight, calling for equal opportunity for everyone to express feeling.

However we take it, the basic message is one: restraint and composure are admirable qualities, and at the same time we must respect the suffering of those who endure. In our homes and workplaces there are many who put up with things without speaking. We can see their silence as strength, but it is also our duty to give them a safe place in which to speak.

A story

Damayanti's Quiet Way

This is the later part of the Nala–Damayanti story in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Nala, who lost his kingdom at dice, wandered in the forest with his wife Damayanti. One night, unable to bear his sorrow, he left Damayanti asleep and went away somewhere. Waking and not finding her husband, Damayanti searched the whole forest. A sea-like grief surged in her mind. But she did not wail, and she did not lose self-control.

After many hardships she reached the palace of the king of Chedi and served there as a maid. Later her father's men found her. Back in Vidarbha, Damayanti thought about how to win back her husband. She sent Brahmins to country after country, asking them to recite a verse to the effect: "Nala, do you know the condition of the wife you left after your fall at dice?" She reasoned that whoever replied to that verse might be Nala.

One Brahmin brought back a reply from Nala, who had been transformed into a dwarf in the land of Ayodhya. By her intelligence Damayanti guessed that he was Nala. Then she had it announced that she would hold a second swayamvara, knowing that Nala could not fail to come. As she expected, Nala came as the charioteer of King Rituparna of Ayodhya.

Damayanti did not display her sorrow for the village to see, nor did she wander lamenting. Calmly, with wisdom and dignity, she searched for her husband and found him. In the end, the story says, Nala regained his true form. The couple reunited and recovered the kingdom.

The worthy woman of the verse can be seen in Damayanti: one who, in a sea of grief, kept composure and dignity and acted with intelligence.
