Explanation

The last verse of the chapter shows the heroine recovering from her weakness. "There are many who have borne parting and lived on afterwards," she tells herself. For her it is a consolation, a courage. Having been troubled again and again by the pain of parting, in the end she seeks a foothold in other people's experience.

Commentators explain it in two ways. Some say these are the friend's words consoling the heroine. Others say the heroine consoles herself. Either way, the underlying meaning is the same: parting is cruel, yet there are those who have borne it and lived.

For us too this is a lesson useful in a difficult time. In any sorrow, the memory that "many have passed through this and lived" lifts us up. When hope and patience join that thought, the days move slowly and bring us to shore. Valluvar ends the chapter by placing a faint hope beneath the sorrow. Notice the order: Valluvar first grants that parting is hard to bear and only then points to those who have borne it, for comfort that denies the sorrow is no comfort at all. The single word palar carries the hope of this verse. When a solitary sorrow becomes a shared path, its weight grows lighter.

A story

Waiting at the Nagapattinam Port

Nagapattinam is one of the old ports of Tamil Nadu. It has long been usual for sea merchants to sail from there to distant lands. The wife of such a merchant, Kanakavalli, went every evening from the day her husband set out to the seaside temple and lit a lamp. This is an imagined scene, an illustration of a custom that the women of this land have followed through the ages.

The husband went across the sea. One monsoon season ended and the time when the wind turns came. It was the season when merchants return. Every day Kanakavalli stood on the shore counting the masts visible far away. No ship was her husband's. When her heart sank, an elderly woman who had waited on that same shore for many years said to her, "My husband too came back only after seven seasons; I wept just as you do; and yet here I am."

The old woman's words gave Kanakavalli new strength. She had thought she was carrying her sorrow alone; now she understood it was a path many had crossed. She began to spend her days in weaving and worship.

The essence of this tale is that the women waiting in the old port towns stood by one another. A community that shares loneliness is the best medicine for sorrow. So we too can notice a neighbour's parting and offer comfort.

A few months later, one morning, a mast appeared off the shore. It was her husband's ship. The waiting was over. The lesson of the Kural is this: many have borne separation and lived, and their experience is a comfort to us.
