Explanation

Here the speaker is the heroine, alone with her friend. For the last few days the hero has shown more affection than usual. He unites with her fondly. But this very excess of love raises doubt in her. 'Peritharri' gives the sense of doing love in plenty; 'aritharri' means bearing with difficulty what cannot easily be restrained. She senses that he is hiding something, holding it down, and showing boundless love in exchange.

She fears that the hidden thing may be the thought of going away again. The phrase 'anbinmai soozhvathu' expresses her fear; she feels the parting as an absence of love. Her guess is that, hesitant to tell her he will leave, he shows more love beforehand to make up for it.

Commentators take this verse as the heroine telling her friend her doubt. Some take 'aritharri' as the heroine herself bearing with difficulty; then she is hiding her own sorrow as she stands. In both senses her emotional subtlety is plain.

In our own lives, too, an unusually great kindness from someone sometimes says a message without saying it. At such a time, asking lovingly, 'Is there something you want to tell me?' is the way to ease the doubt. Rather than relying only on guessing at hints, confirming through loving talk is also wisdom. The verse is a reminder that signs are to be read with care and then, gently, checked.

A story

A Sweet Evening Before the Voyage

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In Kaveripoompattinam the merchant Kumaran lived with his wife Vasuki. A few months earlier he had returned from a long voyage. Vasuki was glad of his return and believed he would not go far again.

But for some days Kumaran's behaviour had changed a little. He spoke with more affection than usual. Each evening he bought her favourite jasmine. He finished his work quickly and spent time with her. Though there was a smile on his face, a shadow he did not wish to speak of showed in his eyes.

One evening Vasuki said to her friend Amudha, 'Sister, he shows me more love now than before. It is sweet to me and also frightening. Is he thinking of going on a voyage again?' Amudha laughed and said, 'Ask him yourself.'

That night Vasuki said lovingly, 'If there is anything on your mind, tell me; I shall bear anything.' Kumaran was silent a while. Then he said, 'How sharply you see! A trade mission from the king has come; my heart would not let me tell you.' So he told the truth.

Vasuki smiled through tears. 'I guessed it earlier. But now that you yourself have told me, it is a comfort,' she said. The two spoke of the day of departure and planned arrangements for his early return.

The story shows that when the sharpness to guess a sign and the love to confirm it by speaking go together, a relationship grows firm.

To reflect on

When someone close to you is unusually tender, do you read it as a sign or do you ask them gently what is on their mind?
