Explanation

This verse raises a challenging question. If one can live household life by the path of virtue, what is there to gain by going elsewhere? 'Puraththaatril' means the path outside the house, that is, the path of renunciation. Valluvar does not wholly dismiss renunciation, but here he expresses his confidence that household life lived by virtue is enough.

In that age renunciation was regarded as the highest path. It was widely believed that a person could attain the supreme truth only by leaving home for the forest. In that climate this argument of Valluvar's is a bold idea. Virtue lies in how one lives, he says, not in changing one's place.

There is a subtlety. The condition 'araththaatrin ilvaazhkkai aatrin' matters. Not every household life equals renunciation; only one run by the path of virtue deserves that status. A household life that avoids duty and seeks comfort is lower than renunciation. A household life run with responsibility, love and honesty is itself an austerity.

Older commentators like Parimelazhagar take this verse not as a denial of renunciation but as praise of the height of household life. There are separate qualifications for taking up renunciation and for staying in household life. Each person may choose the way that suits their fitness.

Its inner meaning is that any path of life gives elevation if it goes with virtue. Workplace, home, temple or forest: any place is best if the heart is pure. Conduct matters, not place.

In our life many think, 'If I leave home and go somewhere, I will find peace.' The verse gently reminds us: first try living virtue in your own home.

A story

Even If Mithila Burns, Nothing of Mine Burns

From the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata. Janaka, king of Mithila, ruled his kingdom and yet stood supreme in wisdom. The Puranas honour him as a rajarshi, a royal sage. In his palace were wealth, army and ministers. But his mind clung to none of them. For this reason tradition honours him as one who reached the height of renunciation while remaining in household and royal life.

At several places the Mahabharata recalls a saying of Janaka: "Even if Mithila burns, nothing that is mine is burning." The saying shows the clarity that the loss of city and palace would not touch the peace of his heart.

The saying does not preach irresponsibility. Janaka ruled the land well, protected the people and performed sacrifices and gifts. His way was to do his duty without fail and let go of attachment. "I am king; the work of the kingdom is my duty; but it will not rule me," was his outlook.

Tradition also says that seekers of renunciation went to learn from him. The Mahabharata tells how Shuka, son of the sage Vyasa, came to Janaka in search of wisdom and learned from him. That sages who had practised austerity in the forest went seeking wisdom at a palace door is witness to the height of household life.

Here household life and wisdom blended. Even to those who left home and went to the forest in search of the path of renunciation, Janaka stood as a lesson. His life shows that household life is no obstacle, and that if the mind is set it can become a life of austerity.

To Valluvar's question, 'If one lives household life by the path of virtue, what is there to gain by going off to another path?' Janaka's life is the answer. He lived out the truth that the highest state can be reached while remaining in household life.
