Explanation

This couplet speaks of the indispensability of leaders for the army's victory. Commentators explain 'nilaimakkal' as soldiers who stand firm in battle. However many such soldiers there may be, an army without leaders to guide them is as good as non-existent.

If the leader does not guide, soldiers do not know where to go, when to strike, or when to withdraw. There is an armed crowd but it has no purpose. So Valluvar shows the worth of leadership as the very life of an army.

For 'nilaimakkal' some say the foot soldiers who stand in the front, and others the standing army that stays with the king. In any case the meaning of the couplet is the lack of leadership despite numbers.

We can apply this to our lives. However skilled the workers, an organisation without right leadership stumbles. So choosing a good leader matters above all. We see the worth of leadership elsewhere too. A boat may have many oars, but without a rudder it loses its direction. Likewise, however many soldiers there are, an army without a guiding leader is useless. The couplet reminds the king to choose fit leaders and give them due honour. Leaders are needed at many levels, as the plural thalaimakkal shows.

A story

The Narayani Sena and Krishna

This comes in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. When the Kurukshetra war was certain, both sides sought Krishna's help. Duryodhana and Arjuna went to Dwaraka on the same day. Krishna was asleep. Duryodhana came first and sat on a seat at his head. Arjuna came later and stood humbly near his feet.

When Krishna woke he saw Arjuna first, and then looked at Duryodhana. Since both were kinsmen, he said he would give one thing to one and another to the other. He would be on one side as a mere counsellor, not fighting, and the other side would receive his Narayani Sena, a great army of Yadavas. Since he saw Arjuna first, Arjuna got the first choice.

Arjuna chose Krishna, who bore no weapon. Duryodhana rejoiced at obtaining the great army and thought Arjuna's choice foolish. In the war Krishna became Arjuna's charioteer and guided him.

At the end the Pandavas won. Though the Kaurava side had very many soldiers, all was scattered. Many read the lesson that, though strong warriors were there, they lacked guiding leadership such as Krishna's. Yet we must also remember that the Kaurava side too was led by great warriors such as Bhishma, Drona and Karna.

This story illustrates the couplet 'even if an army has abundant soldiers, without leaders it is as nothing.' More than numbers, it is guiding leadership that decides victory.
