Explanation

Here Valluvar uses a forceful comparison. A 'kol-il pori' is a sense organ that does not perform its natural function. It is still an organ, but its purpose is not fulfilled. In the same way, the head exists for a purpose: to think, to bow, to become aware. When it neither bows nor perceives, it loses its natural use. This image is about the failure of an organ to function. It is not meant to lessen the worth of people who live with disabilities, which was plainly not Valluvar's intention. His point concerns a faculty that does not fulfil its purpose.

The eight qualities of 'en-gunaththaan' are listed in different ways by different commentators, including things like complete knowledge, limitless power, boundless compassion, and unbounded bliss. Which exact eight are counted matters less than the idea that every one of them is complete. Before such completeness, to bow is not an act of lowliness; it is the knowledge that rightly measures oneself.

Today, many mistake a head that never bows for courage or self-respect. In fact, wisdom lies in knowing when a head may bow. A mind that will not lower itself before an elder's advice or a younger person's truth loses its chance to learn. The branch that cannot bend snaps in the storm. A leader who cannot say 'I was wrong' carries a head that serves no purpose. A low doorway strikes only the one who will not stoop, and life has many low doorways. To bow is to keep the faculty of learning alive.

A story

The Eyes of Kannappa

From the Periya Puranam.

In the land of Potthappi, to the chief of the hunters, Nagan, and his wife Tatthai, a son was born named Thinnan. Strong and brave, he came hunting to the hill of Kalahasti. When he saw the Shiva lingam there, called Kudumithevar, boundless love rose in his heart. He wished to stay beside the Lord who stood alone in the forest.

He knew no rites of worship. So, in his own way, he lovingly offered the meat he had hunted, brought water in his mouth to bathe the Lord, and took the wild flowers from his own hair to adorn him. All night he stood guard with bow and arrow. Sivagocharyar, the priest who regularly worshipped on that hill, saw this and was grieved. But the Lord appeared in his dream and said, "His deeds are dear to me. Tomorrow, hide and see the nature of his love."

The next day blood flowed from one eye of the lingam. Kannappan was shaken. Herbs did not stop the bleeding. Without hesitation he took out one of his own eyes with his arrow and fixed it there, and the bleeding stopped. Then blood flowed from the Lord's other eye. He resolved to give his other eye too. Knowing that he would lose his sight and not find the spot, he placed his foot on the place of the lingam's eye as a marker. As he brought the arrow to his eye, the Lord appeared and said, "Stop, Kannappa, stop," and drew him into grace, the Purana says.

An eye is valued for seeing; of what use is an eye that cannot see? In the same way, a head that does not bow at the Lord's feet is useless. The love of Kannappar, who gave a part of his own body to the Lord, shows us the true meaning of the bowing head.

To reflect on

When did you last lower your head, in thought or in word, to someone younger or humbler than you, and what did you learn?
