Explanation

'Imaiyaar' are the gods, who never wink. Gods know no sorrow and have every comfort. Valluvar begins by saying, even if one lives as richly as they do. Then comes the word 'paadilare'. 'Paadu' is dignity, worth, standing. So the point of the verse is that however comfortable a man's life, he can still lack standing.

'Amaiyaar thol' refers to shoulders as soft as bamboo, a conventional phrase in poetry. It points to the charm and tenderness of love. What is warned against here is losing oneself under the pull of that tenderness. Commentators explain 'anjubavar' as those who are charmed into submission. Whether it is fear or fascination, the point is that the mind is not at work.

The world values not mere comfort but a person's strength of mind and conduct. Even if he lives with a god's luxuries, if he can nowhere stand firmly by an opinion of his own, the village will not esteem him. Esteem is something we earn ourselves; it is not handed to us.

Even now we hear people say of a comfortable man, 'He has no mind of his own.' Wealth is one thing and esteem is another, and this verse makes it clear. Wealth and comfort bring respect only when joined with honesty and firmness.

A man may enjoy the pleasures of life, but he must not lose himself completely in them. Lasting esteem is born where pleasure and duty stand in balance. That is what Valluvar expects from us.

A story

Sugriva in Kishkindha

This episode is told in the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana.

Sugriva, driven from his kingdom and suffering, had been helped by Rama, whose arrow felled Vali. Sugriva became king of Kishkindha and sat in his palace with his wife Ruma and with Tara, who had been Vali's queen. He had also promised Rama to search for Sita.

Since the rains had begun, Rama had agreed to postpone the search for four months. But Sugriva sank into the pleasures of the palace. Food, song, dance and women ate up days and weeks. Even after the rains ended he did not remember his word. Though he lived in the richness of the gods, he had forgotten his duty.

Rama noticed, and sent Lakshmana to ask what was the matter. When the monkey warriors saw Lakshmana arrive at the gate of Kishkindha in anger with his bow, they shook with fear. Sugriva was bewildered. Hanuman then said calmly, "Lord, we owe a debt to Rama. It was wrong to sink into pleasure and forget our word."

Tara went to Lakshmana and spoke with humility and good sense and soothed his anger. Sugriva, ashamed, begged pardon of Lakshmana and said, "I will gather the armies at once." The bands of vanaras set out in all four directions to search for Sita.

In this episode, when Sugriva forgot his duty and sank into pleasure, he began to lose his standing. But he realised his fault and corrected himself. The tale says that one who is deluded by a rich life and lets duty slip loses the esteem of the world, and that the wisdom to see a fault and mend it is needed by everyone.

To reflect on

Where have comfort and pleasure quietly made you forget something you promised?
