Meaning

I stand holding up the flag of victory. Can cruel Death now take even one step towards me? When they hear 'Maran, who took the very form of the Veda', there are learned ones who raise their lotus hands above their heads in worship. I have taken their feet as my crown.

Explanation

This is the height of the Vaishnava idea of being servant to the devotees. Kambar does not stop at worshipping the Alvar; he takes as the ornament of his own head the feet of those devotees who join their hands at the mere sound of the Alvar's name.

That is why he has no fear of death. Tradition holds that Yama cannot come near one who belongs to the company of devotees.

Vishnu Purana, Book 3, Chapter 7

What Yama Told His Messengers

From the Vishnu Purana. Nakula once asked Bhishma, and Bhishma told of a conversation he had heard. Yama once called one of his messengers close and whispered in his ear:

'When you see those who worship Madhusudana, turn away from them. I am lord over others, not over the devotees of Vishnu. One who does not swerve from his duty, who is the same to friend and foe, who does not covet another's wealth, who wishes harm to no one, who holds Keshava in a pure heart: leave him alone from afar. Before one in whose heart Vishnu dwells, you cannot stand, as darkness cannot stand before the sun.'

It is with this command, given by Yama himself to his messengers, in mind that Kambar asks, 'Can cruel Death take even one step towards me?' Death does not come near one who wears the feet of devotees on his head.
