Explanation

For whom was the Alvar born? For scholars, ascetics, yogis or debaters? For God or for his devotees? Kambar gives no answer. He came in such a way that each one feels, 'He came for me.'

'Was it for the one with beautiful shoulders?' is a lovely question. Did God himself need the Alvar? Vaishnava tradition holds such a thought: God longs for his devotees and sent the Alvars to draw them to him.

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva

Krishna at Vidura's House

From the Mahabharata. Krishna came to Hastinapura to make peace on behalf of the Pandavas. Duryodhana had prepared a great feast and a decorated mansion for him in the palace.

But Krishna did not accept. 'An envoy feasts only after his work is done. You have not invited me with love, and I am not in need,' he said, and went to the house of Vidura, who lived simply. Vidura offered him with love the plain food he had, and Krishna ate it with all his heart.

Whom does God come seeking? Not wealth or rank, but love. That is also the answer to Kambar's question of whom the Alvar came for: for anyone who waits with love.
