Meaning

O you whose feet are fragrant with the Veda! O culmination of all the Vedas! O lightning on the white lotus! O form of endless gems! O dawn that ends the night of delusion for those who bow to you with joy! On this earth there is no one but you who knows me and makes me her own.

Explanation

'Mayal iravin vidive', dawn of the night of delusion, is the central phrase. Delusion is like night: everything is there, yet nothing is seen clearly, and we take shadows for things. The knowledge the Goddess gives is the dawn of that night. At dawn the world does not change; only our seeing becomes clear.

The last line is deeply personal: 'there is none but you who knows me and makes me her own'. She alone knows all my faults, my stumbling and the desires hidden within, and still accepts me. To know fully and still to love is true grace.

Bhagavad Gita, chapter 18

The Moment Arjuna's Delusion Ended

From the Bhagavad Gita in the Mahabharata. On the field of Kurukshetra Arjuna asked for his chariot to be halted between the two armies and saw before him his grandsire, his teachers and his kin. His bow Gandiva slipped from his hand. 'I do not want a kingdom won by killing these,' he said, and sank down weeping on the chariot floor. What was duty and what was right, his mind could no longer see; it groped in darkness.

Krishna taught him in seven hundred verses: of the undying Self, of action without attachment, of devotion and of wisdom. At the end he asked, 'Arjuna, have you heard this with a single mind? Has the delusion born of ignorance gone?'

Arjuna replied: 'Nashto mohah smritir labdha. By your grace, Achyuta, my delusion is destroyed and my memory has returned. I stand firm, my doubts gone; I will do as you say.' A confusion like night ended in a dawn. That dawn is what Kambar calls 'the dawn of the night of delusion'.

To reflect on

Do you remember a moment when a confusion suddenly cleared? Where did that clarity come from?
