Thiruvilaiyadal PuranamForty-Eight Letters, Forty-Eight Poets
From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. When the Pandya king founded the Tamil Sangam at Madurai, forty-eight poets took their seats in it. Tradition says that the forty-eight letters which form the body of Kalaimagal, Brahma's consort, were born on earth as these forty-eight poets. In other words, the Goddess herself came as the poets of Tamil.
The poets began to argue about who among them was greatest. Lord Shiva, as Somasundarar of Madurai, came in the guise of a poet and gave them the Sangam plank. It was only a span long, but it would widen to make room for a true poet and throw off any pretender who sat on it.
In this story Tamil and the divine cannot be separated: the Goddess's letters are the Tamil poets, and Shiva himself gives Tamil its seat. Kambar's name for the Goddess, 'maiden of fine Tamil', grows from this tradition.
