The Possession of Knowledge · Arivutaimai

This chapter says that wisdom is an imperishable fortress that protects a person, and that fitting oneself to the world and foreseeing what comes are marks of wisdom. It closes by saying the wise possess everything, and the unwise, whatever they own, have nothing.

Introduction

After the three chapters on Learning, Ignorance and Hearing, Valluvar places the chapter on the Possession of Knowledge. Learning and hearing are ways of getting knowledge; the possession of knowledge is when that knowledge has truly come to a person and shows in his thought and action. Not all who read books are wise; but all the wise have in some way formed themselves by learning and hearing. So this chapter stands as the fruit of the three before it.

The first verse itself calls wisdom a protective instrument. It is a fortress that even enemies cannot destroy from within. A fort may be guarded by walls, but enemies may break them. The fort of wisdom is in the heart, so no enemy can enter. The second verse says wisdom is not letting the mind go wherever it goes, but removing evil and leading it to good. The third says wisdom is seeing the true meaning in whatever anyone says.

The fourth says that wisdom is to say what one has to say so that others grasp it easily, and to see the subtle meaning of what others say. The fifth calls the steady knowledge that neither blooms in joy nor closes in sorrow the knowledge that embraces the world. The sixth says that to live fitted to the world as it is, is wisdom. The seventh says that foreseeing what is to come is the nature of the wise.

The eighth gives a subtle thought: not to fear what should be feared is folly; to fear what should be feared is the work of the wise. The ninth says that for one wise enough to guard in advance against coming danger there is no sudden trouble. The tenth ends: the wise have everything, and the unwise, whatever else they own, have nothing.

In this chapter Valluvar shows wisdom at two levels. One is looking inward: controlling the mind and leading it to good. The other is looking outward: knowing the world, people and what is to come with subtlety. One who has both is fully wise. Thus wisdom is shown not only as a personal quality but as the skill to live in harmony with society.

In the world today information is plentiful. But true wisdom is to examine information, to know good from bad, and to think ahead of the results. This chapter is a guide to that wisdom.

Chapter story

Hanuman Crosses the Ocean

In the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, before Hanuman, who set out to find Sita, lay an ocean a hundred yojanas wide. All the vanara warriors stood unable to cross it. Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his strength. Hanuman climbed Mount Mahendra, took a huge form and leapt over the sea.

First the mountain Mainaka rose from the sea and invited him: 'You must be tired; rest on me.' Hanuman honoured its kindness. But holding that he must not rest before his task was done, he touched the mountain with his hands in respect and went on without rest. Here his wisdom did not let the mind go along the pleasant road but kept him on his duty.

Next, to test Hanuman's wisdom and strength, the gods sent Surasa, mother of the nagas. Surasa took the form of a huge rakshasi and said, 'I am going to swallow you; come into my mouth.' Hanuman begged, 'I go on Rama's work. When the work is done I will return. Then I will come into your mouth.' Surasa did not agree. Hanuman enlarged his body. Surasa enlarged her mouth.

Then in a moment Hanuman shrank to the size of a thumb, entered her mouth and came out at once. 'Your wish is fulfilled. Now I go,' he said. Seeing his fine understanding and skill with words, Surasa was pleased and blessed him. He passed that obstacle not by strength but by wisdom.

Third, the rakshasi Simhika, hidden in the sea, caught Hanuman's shadow and pulled him. Hanuman saw her trick at once. When she opened her mouth he went inside, tore her inner parts and killed her. It was his wisdom that quickly knew the enemy's nature and decided accordingly.

After reaching Lanka, as he entered the city, the guardian goddess Lankini stopped him. He subdued her too and went in. There at midnight he searched the palaces of Lanka in a small form. When he saw that Sita was not there his mind was not shaken. Calmly he went toward the Ashoka grove. On finding Sita there, he did not approach her boldly but softly sang the story of Rama from a tree. Sita looked at him with doubt; he humbly told the tokens and won her trust.

In this way, at every obstacle, what Hanuman used was wisdom more than strength. When Rama praises him he calls him the best among the wise.

As the Kural says, wisdom is an imperishable fortress that enemies cannot enter. Hanuman crossed the sea not only by bodily strength but also by the clarity of his mind. His mind did not go to rest or to fame but stayed fixed on the task.
