Explanation

Two comparisons come one after the other in this verse. First, one who sleeps is no different from the dead. In sleep there is no feeling, no action and no contact with the world. Likewise one immersed in intoxication, though alive, is without feeling. The second comparison is that those who drink are eaters of poison. Poison, even if it does not kill at once, gradually destroys body and mind. Liquor does the same.

'Thunjinaar' can mean those who sleep and also those who are dead. Commentators such as Parimelazhagar take it here to mean sleep. But sleep is no fault; it is natural rest. We can understand that Valluvar refers to the state without awareness, without knowing reality. When intoxication is compared to sleep, it is not rest but a death of awareness.

There is an important poison story in our Puranas. But there the one who drank the poison did so to protect the world. Here the drinker takes it for his own pleasure. The difference is very important. What is mentioned here is taking poison, under the name of pleasure, without any cause.

Doctors today often warn about diseases caused by tobacco and liquor. The liver, heart, brain and many organs are affected. What Valluvar called poison seems a surprising foresight.

So to be merely alive is not life; to be awake is life. It is our duty to guard that wakefulness.

A story

Neelakanta, the Blue-Throated Lord

This is the story of the churning of the Ocean of Milk, told in the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana and the Shiva Purana.

To obtain nectar, the gods and the demons churned the Ocean of Milk, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. They pulled from both sides for a long time. From the depths many wonderful things came up one by one. When joyful things such as Kamadhenu, Airavata, Ucchaishravas and the wish-fulfilling tree appeared, everyone cheered.

Suddenly from the depths of the ocean rose a terrible poison called Halahala. Its heat and fumes began to burn the world. The sky darkened, creatures were afraid, and gods and demons trembled. No one could stop the poison. All ran to Lord Shiva and took refuge.

In compassion Lord Shiva took the poison in his hand and prepared to swallow it. Tradition says that the Goddess Parvati anxiously placed her hand on his throat so that the poison would not go down into his stomach. The poison stayed in his throat, and his neck turned blue. So he is praised as 'Neelakanta'.

To protect the entire world he took that poison, risking his own life. He desired not a drop of it for himself. By that, all living beings survived. In memory of it devotees keep vigil on Mahashivaratri.

In this story, drinking poison is a sacrifice to save the world. But those whom Valluvar mentions drink, for their own pleasure, a poison that destroys themselves and their families. The two are as far apart as a mountain and a pit.

Poison is always poison, and to drink it there must be a lofty cause like the welfare of the world. The contrast in the story shows that those who drink it for their own pleasure always meet ruin.

To reflect on

What would be worth risking yourself for, and what are you tempted to risk yourself for that is not?
