Explanation

The first word of this verse is 'utkappadaar'. 'Utku' is fear mixed with respect. For a man to be feared by his enemies is a sign of his strength and clarity. Enemies readily notice how the strength of a drinker declines and how his decisions waver, so they do not fear him. This applies to a king, a leader or the head of a household. The world does not fear one who cannot control himself; it only tries to use him.

In 'oli izhappar', 'oli' stands for his fame, reputation, the glow of his face and the clarity of his mind. The word 'izhappar', will lose, shows the gradual decline. This loss does not happen in a day. Small falls of each day add up and push him into darkness. That is why Valluvar adds the word 'enjnaandrum', always: it is a continuing decline.

The word 'katkaadhal' deserves attention. Valluvar does not just say 'drinking'; he says 'love for kal'. It is not only a habit but a desire settled deep in the heart. Love is that which makes one forget everything. One immersed in the love of liquor forgets family and duty.

The meaning is plain in life today. All around we see someone addicted to intoxicants losing profession, relationships and good name. Even one who was once thought of as respected and able loses his lustre through the habit.

So this verse is not mere moral advice; it is a fact of life. The world respects one who has a clear mind and self-control, and gradually sets aside one who is immersed in intoxication. We must guard our own light.

A story

The Yadavas at Prabhasa

This history is told in the Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Bhagavata Purana.

The Yadava clan lived at Dwaraka under Krishna with great prosperity and fame. They were warriors whom enemies feared. But as the years passed, pride and carelessness grew among them. Once some youths mocked sages, and a curse fell that the clan would meet destruction. Evil omens appeared in Dwaraka.

Krishna called the Yadavas and said, "The city is no longer safe. Let us all go to the holy place of Prabhasa, worship, and give gifts." The people went with their families in chariots to that sacred spot on the seashore. There were holy baths, charities and worship.

But after the worship they lost their restraint. They began to drink the wine that Krishna had told them to avoid. In their intoxication old enmities came out. Satyaki and Kritavarman taunted each other, pointing to past acts in war, and their anger grew.

Satyaki drew his sword and killed Kritavarman. That was enough. The Yadavas split into two sides and clashed. When weapons ran out, they pulled up the eraka grass that grew along the shore. By the curse it turned into iron clubs. Fathers struck sons, friends struck friends. In a short time the clan, famed for its valour, destroyed itself on the shore.

No one could stop the destruction, says the Purana. What destroyed the clan that everyone feared was not an enemy's army but its own drink and the delusion it brought.

This history is a great witness to how the love of liquor destroys esteem and lustre.
