Explanation

The last verse of the chapter acts as a bridge between this chapter and the next two on abstaining from liquor and on gambling. Three bad companions come together here: double-minded women, liquor and 'kavaru', the instrument of gambling. Valluvar calls them 'thirunneekkappattar thodarbu', the associations of those from whom Thiru has been removed. One sense is that those whom the Goddess of fortune has abandoned join them. The other is that she abandons those who join them.

'Irumanap pendir' are those who think of one in one mind and of another in the other. 'Kal' makes the mind unsteady. 'Kavaru' is the instrument of gambling, which increases desire and destroys wisdom. The three share a common quality: they ruin lasting wisdom and lasting wealth.

'Thiru' here means wealth and splendour. In Tamil tradition Lakshmi stays in a house only where there are effort, discipline and unity. Where these are absent she leaves. At the place she has left, these three evil companions arrive. That is the verse's warning.

We can see it in practice. In families whose prosperity is declining, small habits come first: wrong company, a little drinking, a small bet. They grow and in the end destroy prosperity itself. So we must be watchful with small habits.

At the end of the chapter Valluvar gives a warning with hope in it. The other side of it is that if we set them aside early, Lakshmi will stay with us.

A story

The Mansion Lakshmi Left

This is an imagined tale set in the Tirunelveli country on the day of Deepavali.

Near Tirunelveli lived a big landowner, Chokkalingam Pillai. His forefathers had grown paddy, banana and sugarcane, a family that fed the village. The Lakshmi puja held in their house on Deepavali was famous throughout the village. There would be clay lamps at the door, mango-leaf festoons, and vessels full of payasam.

When Chokkalingam Pillai took charge, the puja became a formality to him. In the evenings, instead of going to the fields, he joined a group of friends. One introduced him to liquor and another to the game of dice. The third praised everyone in sweet words and took money from him. He left the fields to hired hands. When the accountant warned him, he was angry.

In a few years his lands were mortgaged. The granary was empty. When Deepavali came, there was not even oil in the house to light the lamps. The friends vanished one by one. His wife Lakshmi sold a little ornament of hers and lit a single clay lamp.

That night Chokkalingam sat looking at the lone lamp. When he saw the old picture of Lakshmi hanging on the wall, his eyes filled. "Mother, I have driven you from my house," he wept. An old man from the next house came quietly and said, "Lakshmi loves effort and discipline. Even today you can call her."

Next day he went to the field. On the small plot that remained he worked with his own hands. Without touching liquor or dice, he lived with good habits. Years passed, and little by little his life bloomed again.

When he had plenty, he chose bad companions and lost it. When he chose effort and discipline, he got it back. The tale shows that double-minded company, liquor and dice are companions that drive away Thiru, and that Lakshmi accepts one who mends his ways.
