Explanation

The word 'thookki', weighing, occurs twice in this verse. The first, in 'payanthookki', is of the woman who weighs how much gain she will get as she speaks. The second, in 'nayanthookki', is our own weighing of her purpose and conduct. The charm of the verse lies in this: just as they weigh, we must weigh. They measure the amount of wealth we have and speak sweetly; we are to measure their intention and keep away. Valluvar conveys both weighings, and the counter-weighing, with one word, and it is a delight.

'Panbuiraikkum' means speaking courteously and also speaking of good qualities. Such persons will praise us and admire our virtues. There may be truth in such praise, but nothing about its purpose is made plain. So when we hear praise, before being pleased we should pause a moment to ask why it is being given.

'Nallaa vidal' is to leave without making friends. Valluvar is not asking us to cultivate hatred. Do not harm them, do not mock them, but do not draw close; that is the gentle warning. Avoidance needs no anger; clarity is enough.

This lesson applies today in business, politics and social life. When someone shows us too much affection, it is no fault to look quietly to see whether he is dealing with us with an eye on our wealth or influence. There is no distrust in it, only awareness.

So while we should not lose good relationships, we should not open our hearts to a sweetness whose purpose we do not know. Honest affection on both sides is the basis of friendship, and that is Valluvar's lesson.

A story

Putana and the Infant Krishna

This episode is told in the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana.

Kamsa had heard a voice from the sky say that the eighth son of his sister would be his death. So he sent demons to destroy the newborn children of Gokula. The child Krishna was growing up in the loving care of Yashoda in the house of the cowherd chief Nandagopa. A few days after his birth, Kamsa sent a demoness named Putana.

Putana changed her form. As a very beautiful young woman, adorned with garlands and jewels and with a sweet smile, she entered Gokula. Those who saw her were charmed by her beauty. The women wondered, "Who is this? A goddess?" She went straight to the house of Nandagopa.

She spoke sweetly to Yashoda. "What a lovely child! My heart wishes to lift him on my lap and nurse him," she said. Motherhood seemed to fill her words. Her beauty and gentle speech made no one doubt her.

She took the infant Krishna on her lap and began to give him the milk of her breast, which she had smeared with a deadly poison. But though a baby, Krishna knew everything. He drew not only her poisoned milk but her very life as well. Putana writhed in agony, cried out, took her true demonic form, and fell.

All Gokula was shaken by the huge body of the demoness. Krishna was laughing and playing on her chest. By the Lord's mercy even she attained a good state, says the Bhagavata.

Those who trusted only a pleasing appearance and affectionate words were charmed. But the Lord who knew the truth was not deceived. The tale shows how right it is to examine the purpose and not merely the sweetness of the word.

To reflect on

When you hear praise or warmth, do you stop to ask what it hopes to gain?
