Explanation

This verse shows the incident of the previous verse as a specific experience. The heroine was embracing the hero. She moved away for just a short while. In that small gap pallor scooped her up. Pudaipeyarndhen means "I moved aside, drew slightly away." It was just a moment.

The word allikkolvatre shows pallor's eagerness. Like the waiting darkness, it takes her up as soon as the chance comes. This metaphor of scooping with hands shows pallor acting as a thing, a character. Valluvar converts the simile of the previous verse into an event here.

The separation here is not a long distance but a slight drawing away. The poet's fancy is that in love even the smallest gap gives sorrow. Though it seems exaggeration, it captures the lover's feeling correctly. Joy when together; longing even with a slight drawing away.

In our lives those in loving relationships feel even a small parting greatly. It is not weakness but depth of love. But this depth should develop the habit of passing the time he is absent peacefully, rather than pushing one into dependence on him. Since the act "scoop up" denotes the loving act of lifting with both hands, pallor's scooping becomes pitiable. The irony of the word is noteworthy here.

A story

Rama and the Golden Deer

In the Aranya Kanda, Rama and Sita lived quietly in the hut at Panchavati. Those were the days Rama delighted in embracing his wife. Ravana plotted to seize Sita. He made Maricha take the form of a golden deer and sent him near the hut. The deer drew Sita's attention by its beauty.

Sita asked Rama for the deer. Rama hesitated. Lakshmana warned it might be a magical deer. Yet Rama had no heart to refuse Sita's wish. He asked Lakshmana to guard Sita and went after the deer.

What a great result that short-time separation brought! In the moment Rama went away from the hut, Maricha cried in Rama's voice, "Ha Sita, Ha Lakshmana." Sita was alarmed. She pressed Lakshmana to go help Rama. Tradition says Lakshmana drew a line and told her not to cross it, and left. In that small gap Ravana came and seized Sita.

The heroine of the Kural says, "I lay embracing; I moved aside; in that instant pallor scooped me." In the Ramayana what scooped up Sita was not pallor but Ravana. Yet that too was a great loss in a small gap. These two scenes give one lesson: even a slight drawing away in love can open the way to unexpected sorrows.

The Ramayana describes the great war that followed this small event. Yet tradition does not blame Rama here; it sees the play of fate. It is good to remember that a small lapse may bring great consequence in anyone's life, and to view it with compassion.

So we should realise the value of the time we have near our dear ones.
