Explanation

In this verse the heroine describes her state as if it were a commercial transaction. Kaimmaaru means exchange, return. He has taken my softness and modesty; in exchange he gave me sickness and pallor, she says. It is a graceful accusation of an unfair exchange.

Saayal is softness, beauty, the grace of the body. Naan is modesty, the ornament of womanhood. Both are her high treasures. Once they are gone she is empty. The meaning is that love has seized from her her natural beauty and reserve. It also suggests that when modesty is lost, the courage to express her longing comes.

Though there is a tone of blaming the hero, it is not harsh. It is an endearing complaint, with the tone "what you gave is less than what you took." In love such accounts are not real accounts; they are expressions of affection.

In our lives a relationship may change our very nature. It is good to assess from time to time whether it is for good or ill. The best relationship is one in which love grows without our natural tenderness and reserve being lost. The word kaimmaaru usually denotes help given in return for gratitude. Here, as an irony, it denotes the sickness given in return for what was taken.

A story

The Pale Face of Valli

The Kanda Puranam and Tamil Murugan tradition sing the love of Valli and Murugan. Valli was the foster daughter of Nambirajan, chief of the hunter clan. Murugan, coming in the form of a hunter, saw her guarding the millet field. Her simple beauty and guilelessness attracted him. Love began there.

Murugan spent a few days with Valli and then disappeared. Without seeing him, Valli could not set her mind even on watching the millet. Her body withered; her face paled. Her friends looked on in amazement. "You who were like a flower before, why have you grown so thin?" they asked.

Out of shyness Valli at first said nothing. Her reserve and tenderness were the ornaments of her nature. But as if she had lost them, she spent her days in thought of Murugan. In the Kural the heroine says, "He has taken my softness and modesty." Valli's state was the same. Love seized her natural calm.

Later, tradition says, Murugan tested Valli, coming as a vengai tree, as an old man and as an elephant, and Ganapati helped. In the end Valli married Murugan and lived with him at Tiruttani, the Tamil tradition honours.

Tiruttani remains a place dear to the hearts of Murugan devotees. There the Lord gives darshan with Valli and Deivanai. Devotees honour it as an experience of seeing separation and fulfilment in a single shrine.

Valli's pale face is a witness to the sincerity of her love. Love has things it takes away; but if love is true, fulfilment comes at last.
