Explanation

Having said in earlier verses that the dream gives joy, the heroine now brings out another side. The beloved comes in the dream but vanishes on waking. So the dream also brings grief. She complains: "Why show in the dream the kindness he withheld in waking, and then take it away?"

"Kodiyaar" is a strong word. But this is not a word of true hatred; it is the loving accusation of one who loves. In separation his unkindness angers her, yet she does not let him go.

"Peezhippadhu" means to torment. The dream that shows and then removes is itself a pain. So Valluvar shows the two faces of the dream, which is both joy and suffering.

This verse is a counter-note after the wishes of the fifth and sixth verses. In a single chapter the sweetness of the dream and its cruelty both find a place.

Commentators observe that her complaint is gentle underneath; she calls him cruel only to a dream, never to his face, and this is the privilege of those who are tender. To complain of someone is a sign that one still hopes in them, and so even the harshest word in the verse carries tenderness. Some take "kodiyaar" as simply one without affection, others as one who inflicts cruelty; here the first sense fits better.

A story

Rama's Wakeful Nights

In the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, the poet shows with great depth Rama's grief at separation from Sita. While Rama stayed on the shore of Pampa and on the Malyavan hill, the nights were long for him. The poet shows him telling Lakshmana that sleep would not come.

Traditional storytellers extend this state as follows. If Rama at last slept, Sita came in his dream. He would see her face. But on waking, she was not there. The separation tormented him afresh. So sleep was no companion; it also worked pain. Whether this dream image is stated directly in the poet's words or added by later interpreters is a matter of difference, and it is taken here as general tradition.

He spoke sorrowfully to Lakshmana. Lakshmana comforted his brother and assured him that with Sugriva's help Sita could be found. Rama gained a little hope from this.

Interpreters of the Ramayana have often noted that the poet makes the all-powerful Rama a man of feeling in these passages, and that such touches make the epic dear to ordinary readers who have known separation themselves.

Such parts of the Ramayana are also found notably in Kambaramayanam in Tamil, and the poets praised the human feeling of Rama.

As the heroine of the verse complains, "He comes in the dream to torment me," so for Rama the dream gave both joy and pain. In both the depth of love is the foundation.
