The Visions of the Night · Kanavunilaiyuraiththal

This chapter speaks of the heroine who meets her beloved in dreams and loses him on waking. The dream becomes the support that keeps her alive, and the waking world the cruel interrupter, until she even questions what the village folk can know of her love.

Introduction

Kanavunilai Uraiththal means "telling of the state seen in dreams." It is the seventh chapter of the Karpiyal, the part of the Kamathuppaal that deals with married love. After singing of separation, remembrance and longing, Valluvar here sings of a gentler consolation, the dream. What the day does not give, the night gives; that is the heart of the chapter.

All ten verses are spoken by the heroine. In the first she wonders what feast she can set before the dream that brought a message from her beloved. In the second she says that if her eyes would only sleep, she would go to him in the dream and tell him that she still lives. The dream is for her a messenger, a bridge and a companion of life.

From the third verse she unfolds the power of dreams. She says her life stands only because she sees in dreams the one who shows no kindness in waking hours. In the fourth she says dream itself gives the joys of love. In the fifth she observes with fine subtlety that the dream and the waking world are alike in sweetness for as long as the beloved is seen.

The sixth verse is the cry at the top of the chapter: "If there were no such thing as waking, my beloved who came in the dream would never leave." The seventh brings a loving complaint: why does one who shows no kindness when I wake come to torment me in dreams? The eighth gives a graceful picture, that he rests on her shoulder in sleep and, as soon as she opens her eyes, goes straight into her heart.

In the last two verses the villagers appear. They blame the beloved for being unkind, but since they do not see him in dreams, the heroine thinks they cannot know the truth. This conveys the deep thought that the outward eye cannot reach the inner truth of a relationship.

Commentators differ slightly. Some take the dream as the real visit of the beloved; others as a creation of the heroine's own mind. In either reading, the dream is for her a rare medicine.

Dreams hold a deep place in Indian culture. In the Ramayana, Trijata's dream gives Sita hope. This chapter likewise shows the dream as a light of hope in sorrow.

Chapter story

Trijata's Dream in the Ashoka Grove

In the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Sita is held captive in the Ashoka grove of Lanka. Rakshasi guards stand around her. Ravana came and tried both threats and persuasion; Sita answered him with a blade of grass held between them as a screen. Each day her hope grew less, and food and sleep left her.

Among the rakshasi guards was one named Trijata, said by tradition to be a daughter of Ravana's brother Vibhishana. She was kind of heart and pitied Sita. One day, when the other guards were frightening Sita, Trijata told them a dream she had seen.

In her dream Rama and Lakshmana come on a white elephant. Sita, dressed in white, crosses an ocean as pale as milk and joins them. Lanka burns. Ravana, smeared with oil, goes south in a chariot drawn by donkeys. Trijata warned the rakshasis that these were evil omens.

She added: "Do not torment Sita. Rama's victory is sure. Bow to her and ask for her grace." Hearing these words, hope sprouted again in Sita's heart. Her left eye and left shoulder throbbed, which Valmiki mentions as good omens.

This joins the verse beautifully. A dream came to Sita as news; Trijata made it a messenger. For the captive, that dream became the very support of her life. The Ramayana shows that even when waking sorrow is heaviest, a dream can give light.

Valmiki presents this dream at some length. Trijata explained to the rakshasis each sign she had seen: Lanka sinking into the sea and Ravana travelling a doomed road. The rakshasis grew afraid and drew back a little from Sita. In this way a dream changed the very atmosphere of the place.

For Sita it was the first good news she had heard. For days she had heard only threats. For the first time someone spoke to her a word that gave hope. Even though it was a dream, she kept it close in her mind. As the heroine of the verse keeps her life going by a dream, Sita passed her days on this message.

One more detail of Trijata's telling is worth noting. She said that in the dream she saw Vibhishana wearing white garlands and sandal paste beneath a white parasol. Later interpreters read this as foretelling coming events. Its importance, however, lies in showing the high place the Ramayana gives to dreams, as signs that carry hope to those in sorrow, just as this chapter of the Kural does.

These details of Trijata's dream come down by tradition, and some particulars differ among editions of the text. Yet the central idea, that the dream gave hope, is the same in all.

Key lessons

  • Dreams and hope are consolations that bear up life in sorrow.
  • The outward eye cannot understand the depth of an unseen bond; one should not give too much weight to what neighbours say.
  • To withhold kindness from one who loves is itself a kind of hurt; it can be mended by honest talk.
  • Sweet memories and dreams give strength to bear the sorrows of life.
  • A dream may fill the lack of the waking world, but the fulfilment lies in practising love while awake.
