Explanation

In the first verse desire came as an axe; here it comes as a ruler. 'Aalum thozhil' means the work of ruling. As a king rules his subjects day and night, so desire rules her heart, says the heroine. 'Kannindru' has two meanings. The first is 'without kannottam', that is, without mercy. The second is 'without eyes', that is, blindly. Either way there is no mercy in that rule. A cruel ruler does not look at the weariness of his subjects, and desire too takes no account of the heroine's weariness.

The word 'yaamaththum' is the life of the verse. 'Yaamam' is the dead of night, the time when all creatures sleep. Even when the world is at rest the heroine's heart does not rest; desire does not stop ruling it. By day work and the talk of others may turn the mind aside; night gives no such room. The commentators see this as proof of how keen feeling becomes in the loneliness of night. She who said at the start of the chapter that restraint is destroyed now tells the cruelty of the force responsible for the destruction.

We know that many people today toss sleeplessly at night. The memories and longings held down in the day rise at night. At such times, rather than fighting them, it helps to accept them quietly and turn attention a little elsewhere. Listening to music, writing a diary, praying: these can soften the rule of the heart. Valluvar shows the strength of feeling truthfully and also hints at the alertness needed to face it.

A story

Valli's Night

This is a part of the story of Valli and Murugan, honoured in the Kanda Puranam and in Tamil devotional tradition.

Valli, who lived in the millet field on Valli Hill as the foster daughter of the hunter chief Nambirajan, first saw Murugan as a hunter. There was a charm in his speech, but she refused to talk with him. Though she was a girl of a hunter clan, her restraint was firm. She did not tell even her friends of her feeling. All that day she drove away parrots and guarded the field as usual.

But when night came everything changed. Everyone in the hut slept. Moonlight poured outside; the forest was quiet. Valli could not sleep and tossed from side to side. The face and words of that hunter came back to her heart again and again. Thoughts of who he was and why he had spoken to her so would not cease. 'What sickness is this?' she asked herself. The feeling hidden by day began to rule her at night.

She rose, came outside the hut and looked at the sky. Stars shone and millet ears swayed in the wind. Far away she heard the cry of a peacock. Tradition in the songs about her says her heart heard in it the memory of Murugan. She thought of her nirai, but knew that love had broken it and entered.

The next day too she did her work as before. But now her eyes searched the distant road for someone. Her friends sensed it and teased her; she blushed with shyness.

Later Murugan came in various forms and won her, that is their story. Before he came her heart had already become his.

Valluvar sings of that feeling which rules even in the deep darkness of midnight as 'yaamaththum aalum thozhil'. Each night of Valli is its example.
