Explanation

In the last verse of this chapter the heroine offers a simple but forceful comparison. When fat is put into fire it does not stand and watch; it melts at once. She asks whether people with such a melting heart can plan, 'Let us first unite, and then stand sulking.' Here 'punarndhu' means 'after uniting', 'udi nirpem' means 'we shall remain in a sulk', and 'enal' means 'to say so'.

The commentators differ a little over the sense. One says it arises as a reply to her friend's suggestion that she may sulk after the reunion. Another says the heroine is speaking to herself. Both reach the same conclusion: for a melting heart, it cannot be done.

Thus the chapter on the loss of restraint completes a full circle from where it began. At first restraint and modesty stood as door and bolt. At the end they are melting fat. This shows both the strength of love and its tenderness. However firmly we plan, when love comes forward, melting is the natural thing, and we may accept it. There is no fault or lowness in it. The verse closes the chapter with a smile and a sigh together, and it prepares the ground for the next chapter, in which the pain of the heart takes on a different colour and the lovers' loving quarrel is yet to be praised.

A story

The Panguni Uthiram Chariot Festival

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a small village near Kanchipuram lived a woman named Devaki and her husband Velan. On the festival of Panguni Uthiram the chariot of the village temple was drawn through the streets. Because Velan was in the team that pulled the chariot, he did not return home from morning till night. All day Devaki waited for him and kept the food cooked.

Long after night had fallen, Velan returned, tired. Devaki felt hurt. 'Today I shall not speak a word when he comes; I shall not even look at his face; only afterwards will I serve the food,' she told her cousin.

The cousin smiled and said, 'First look at his face; then we can think about what to do.' Velan stood at the doorway holding out the temple prasad of sweet pongal. 'I brought this for you, with the very hand that held the chariot rope,' he said.

In that moment all of Devaki's resolutions melted. She took the leaf cup from his hand and, in the lamplight, looked at his tired face and smiled tenderly. 'Is there room for a sulk after the meeting?' her cousin laughed.

This simple household scene shows beautifully that for a heart that melts with love, a sulk does not last.

Panguni Uthiram is a festival kept in many temples of Tamil Nadu, and in tradition it recalls divine weddings such as those of Shiva and Parvati and of Murugan and Deivanai. Small quarrels of ordinary couples take place in the same festive air.
