Military Spirit · Pataichcherukku

This chapter sings of the proud spirit that arises in a warrior's heart on the battlefield. Fearlessly facing the enemy for one's chief, counting wounds as ornaments, valuing fame above life, and showing mercy in victory are its themes. Valluvar says that valour is not mere fury; it becomes true greatness only when joined with honour, discipline and compassion.

Introduction

Padaichcherukku means the proud spirit that must live in the soldiers of an army: a lift of heart made of eagerness for battle, self-confidence and honour. The preceding chapter, Padaimaatchi, spoke of the make-up and character of the army. This chapter examines the heart of each soldier standing in it. The word 'cherukku' has two senses in Tamil, the low sense of arrogance and the high sense of lofty pride. Here Valluvar takes the high sense, a heroic pride rooted in dharma.

The opening couplet of the chapter is a warrior's challenge to the enemy. Do not stand before my chief, it says, for many who stood before him now stand as memorial stones. In Tamil culture it is an old custom to set up a hero-stone for a warrior who died in battle and to worship it, and we meet that custom here. The next couplets say that missing a great target is better than hitting a small one, that compassion is what gives valour its edge, that wounds are the warrior's ornaments, and they praise those who seek fame without regard for life.

The closing couplets show the other side of the warrior. They say that soldiers keep their discipline even when their chief is angry with them, that those who die in the task they undertook are not to be blamed, and that it is a great fortune to die so that one's chief weeps. The chapter does not glorify war for its own sake. Its aim is to honour the loftiness of a heart that dares to give even life for duty, honour and love of one's leader.

A warrior needs not only bodily strength but also firmness of heart. When death stands before his eyes on the battlefield, honour, the sense of duty, love for his chief and the wish to guard the glory of his lineage support him in standing unafraid. These are what Valluvar calls cherukku. They do not come so easily; they grow through training and good leadership.

Today most people have no battlefield. Yet doctors, teachers, police, engineers and farmers each meet challenges in their own field. The message of this chapter applies to them too: to strive for a great aim, to face fear directly, to be merciful in victory, to remain steady in duty even when the chief is angry, and to live gratefully toward those who protected us. Read thus, the chapter is about the way of living with courage and not only about war.

Chapter story

Hanuman's Valour in Lanka

The Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana sings in detail of Hanuman's heroic deeds. When the vanaras took up the task of searching for Sita, the question arose who could leap across the sea a hundred yojanas wide. Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his own strength. Standing on Mount Mahendra, Hanuman took a mighty form and, thinking of Rama's name, sprang into the sky.

On the way the mountain Mainaka invited him to rest, and he lovingly declined. Surasa, mother of the nagas, tried to swallow him, and he overcame her by wit. The rakshasi Simhika seized his shadow and dragged him down, and he killed her. In Lanka the guardian goddess Lankini barred his way, and Hanuman subdued her with a single blow. All these obstacles he crossed alone.

In the Ashoka grove he saw Sita in sorrow, gave her Rama's ring and comforted her. Then he deliberately laid waste the garden. He struck down the rakshasas who came to stop him and also Ravana's son Akshakumara. When Indrajit bound him with the Brahmastra, Hanuman, honouring the weapon, submitted calmly. Standing in Ravana's court as an envoy, he delivered the message of his master Rama. Ravana ordered him killed, and Vibhishana objected that it is not right to kill an envoy. With his tail set afire, Hanuman burned the city of Lanka and returned.

Hanuman's pride was selfless. Every act he did as service to Rama. The feeling that none who stand before his lord Rama will live showed in his words and deeds. Even after victory he did not boast; he said, 'All is Rama's grace.'

This story shows the life of the chapter. Daring that disregards life, devotion to the leader, fearlessness before enemies and humility in victory are all united in Hanuman.

What makes Hanuman's pride so fine is also his humility. Though full of strength, he introduced himself as Rama's servant. When the vanara warriors were stuck, unable to cross the sea, he himself did not know his strength; only after Jambavan reminded him did he realise it. This is a great message: the true warrior does not proclaim his strength; when his leader's work comes, he shows it in action.

When he met Sita in the Ashoka grove he spoke with great respect. Showing the ring Rama had given, he gave her confidence. When he said she could ride on his shoulder to Rama, Sita refused, saying it was proper for her lord himself to come and rescue her. Hanuman accepted. He gave up the wish to finish everything alone by his own strength. This too is a high form of pride: to leave room for the leader's victory.

Even after burning Lanka he feared for his act, worried whether the fire might have harmed Sita. Only on learning she was safe did he rejoice. Thus his valour was joined with love and responsibility.
