Explanation

This couplet is about the greatness of the aim. A forest hare is a small target and easily brought down. An elephant is a great target; to hurl a spear at it is difficult, and one may miss. Yet the spear that missed the elephant has honour, because it is a mark of great effort.

We can take this as a lesson for all people, not only for warriors. It is better to try and fail at a great goal than to win easily at a small endeavour. Even in the failure one can learn, and the mind is raised.

For 'pizhaiththa vel' some say a spear that missed, others a spear broken after striking the elephant. The word 'inidhu' points both to the sweetness in the bearer's heart and to the respect of onlookers. In any case it is the great effort that is praised.

Hunting a hare is a safe, easy act, and there is no fame in it. Aiming at an elephant is a dangerous great deed. Here Valluvar says that it is the loftiness of the aim, more than success or failure, that makes a man honourable. For a hunter it is easy to kill a hare and return home; but he who aims at an elephant stakes his very life. Even if he misses with that spear, his daring is honoured. The word 'endhal' indicates still holding that spear, that is, a state that does not lose courage even in failure. That is what is called sweet here. Facing a strong foe and failing is worth more than beating a weak one.

A story

Bhagiratha's Great Undertaking

The Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tells the story of Bhagiratha. The sixty thousand sons of King Sagara of the Ikshvaku line were burnt to ashes by the wrath of the sage Kapila. It was declared that for them to attain a good state, the heavenly Ganga must come to earth and touch their ashes.

Sagara's grandson Anshuman did penance to bring the Ganga and could not. His son Dilipa also did penance and passed away without finishing. Thus the severe efforts of two generations did not reach the goal. Yet their effort was not in vain; their austerity lit the way for the next generation.

Dilipa's son Bhagiratha handed the kingdom to his ministers and did severe penance for a thousand years at Gokarna. Brahma was pleased and agreed to send the Ganga. To bear the force of her fall, Bhagiratha prayed to Shiva. Lord Shiva held her on his matted locks. Then the Ganga flowed on the path Bhagiratha showed and touched the ashes of Sagara's sons. They attained a good state.

The forefathers' efforts, though they missed, are honourable. Because they aimed at what seemed unreachable, both the family and the world gained glory. The glory won by Bhagiratha's line is higher than winning at an easy goal. The Ganga is even called Bhagirathi.

This story illustrates the couplet 'a spear that missed the elephant is sweeter than the arrow that struck a hare.' A great effort is praiseworthy even if it misses; when the next generation continues it, success comes.
