Explanation

This is one of Valluvar's most famous similes. If salt in food is in measure, the taste increases; if there is no salt, the food becomes tasteless; if the salt is excessive, the food cannot be eaten. Pulavi is like this. 'Amaindhatru' comes in the sense of being fitted to the right measure. The word 'sirithu', a little, ties the measure of the sulk to the measure of the salt.

There are two kinds of wisdom in this verse. The first is that love without sulking is like food without salt, lacking in sweetness. The second is that if the sulk grows excessive and long, it spoils love itself. The phrase 'neela vidal', letting it lengthen, shows that prolonging the sulk is someone's act and does not happen of itself. So the responsibility of ending the sulk rests with the one who sulks.

This may be taken as a continuation of the counsel the friend gave the heroine in the previous verse: 'Sulk, but sulk only a little.' Women who cook in Tamil homes know how delicate the measure of salt is. Valluvar takes that daily experience and makes it the simile for the measure of love. The salt is just so much that the eater does not wrinkle his face; the sulk is just so much that the lover's face does not wither.

This holds in today's relationships too. Expressing small hurts keeps a relationship alive; but staying without speaking for days makes it wither away.

A story

A Pinch of Salt in the Sweet Pongal

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Thanjavur lived an old woman named Kamalambal. When pongal boiled over in her house on the first day of Thai, the whole village was fragrant. Her granddaughter Valli stood beside her in the kitchen that day.

That morning Valli had had a small quarrel with her husband Muthu. Without asking her, he had planned to go to the festival with his friends. So Valli stood with a sulky face. 'I will not speak to him at all, Paatti,' she said.

Kamalambal made no reply and went on stirring the sweet pongal. Then she took a little salt and said, 'See, Valli, if a pinch of salt goes into this pongal, the sweetness stands out more. But if a fistful goes in, it cannot be put in the mouth,' and as she spoke she put in only a measure. 'Sulking is like this. If there is a pinch, love stands out. If it drags on for days, the whole house turns bitter.'

Valli listened quietly. After a while she took pongal in a bowl and went to Muthu. 'If you are going to the festival, tell me before you go,' she said with a smile. Muthu said shyly, 'From now on I will go only after telling you.'

That day the sweetness of the pongal seemed a little greater to everyone.
