Explanation

The speaker of this verse is the friend, and the hearer is the heroine. The hero is standing at the door. The heroine's heart melts and rushes to run to him and embrace him. At that moment the friend holds her hand and says softly, 'Do not embrace him; sulk for a little while, and let us see a little of the distress he suffers.' 'Pullaadhu' means without embracing; 'iraa' is a lengthened form for the sake of the rhythm; 'pulathai' is a command, 'do sulk'.

The friend here has no wish to punish the hero. She too loves him. But she knows that love given too easily loses its rarity. If the embrace is put off for a little, he will feel the measure of his own love, and he will understand the worth of the heroine. The phrase 'allal noi' names the distress he is about to suffer as an ache; it is not a bodily illness but the longing of love. By saying 'kaanbam', 'let us see', in the plural, the friend herself joins the game.

Commentators such as Parimelazhagar take this as counsel from the friend to the heroine, and explain sulking as a spring of unsatisfied desire. The word 'sirithu', a little, is the key here: the sulk must be small, and the warning that it must not grow long is already contained in it.

In our own lives, too, this reminds us that a short pause before a happy meeting makes the happiness greater. There is more savour in accepting love after waiting a little than in accepting it the moment it is given.

A story

The Friend's Small Counsel

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a town near Madurai lived a young woman named Malathi. Her husband Selvan had gone to another town for a month on business. Through that month Malathi kept watching the doorway for his return. Her friend Anbarasi came often to keep her company and talk with her.

One evening the bell of a bullock cart sounded in the street. Selvan had come. Malathi's face bloomed like a lamp. She longed to run and welcome him. Then Anbarasi caught her hand and said softly, 'Do not hurry, Malathi. He is the one who left you alone for a month. First sulk a little, and let us see how much he yearns.'

Malathi held back her laughter. Selvan came into the house. She turned her face away and stood in the kitchen as though arranging the vessels. Selvan hesitated. 'Malathi, I have brought you jasmine flowers,' he said. She did not speak. He set down the bag slowly, came near her, and said, 'Are you angry with me? I was late in coming, forgive me.' Malathi heard the yearning in his voice, and her heart grew sweetly troubled.

Anbarasi, standing by the door, watched with a smile. After a little while Malathi could not hold back her laughter. She turned and said, 'Put the jasmine in my hair yourself.' Selvan's face bloomed. That night the two talked happily for a long time.

That day Anbarasi saw that a small sulk had raised a love that was standing low.
