Explanation

This verse may be called the finest simile of Oodaluvakai. To eat food is a pleasure; but Valluvar says that for what is eaten to be well digested and useful to the body is a greater good. In the same way union is joy; but the sulk deepens that joy and makes it settle in the heart. So he says the sulk is sweeter than union.

Here the word 'aral' points to digestion. Food that is not digested does not do good to the body; sometimes it even gives trouble. Union without the digestion called the sulk remains mere consumption. The union that comes after a sulk stays in the heart.

From another view the pleasure of eating ends in a moment; digestion goes on a long time, and its good lasts many hours. So the joy of union ends in one moment; the joy of the sulk stretches and lasts in the expectation of the delayed union and in its remembrance.

Commentators such as Parimelazhagar take this as the hero's voice praising the sulk. Some take the joy of the sulk as continuing even after union.

In life too, to sit in the fullness after a good meal is a special pleasure. So also, to sit in the peace of a relationship after a quarrel has been settled is a special pleasure. One who knows that peace will not fear a quarrel.

A story

Grandfather's Word After the Feast

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

On Deepavali there was a great feast in the house of Grandfather Neelakandan in a village near Tirunelveli. There were savouries, sweets, sambar and appalam, everything. The son, the daughter-in-law and the grandchildren were all gathered in the house. Grandfather's wife, Paravathi Paatti, served everyone with love.

After the feast Grandfather sat on the verandah. Pleased, stroking his belly, he said, 'There is more comfort in what has been eaten being digested than in the eating.' His grandson Karthik asked in wonder, 'Grandfather, why do you say so?'

Grandfather laughed. 'Your grandmother and I were recently in a small quarrel. For three days we did not speak. Last night she brought me hot rasam, set it down and went off without a word. As I drank it, I understood that everything was over. The savour of that peace is sweeter than today's sweets.'

Grandmother sat nearby and smiled. 'However much your grandfather talks, it is for this one thing that he waits three days,' she said. Karthik looked bewildered. Grandfather stroked his head and said, 'One day you too will understand.'

That evening Grandfather and Grandmother sat in the courtyard chewing betel and talking of old tales. The grandson too felt that there was a special sweetness in their quiet.
