Explanation

In the first verse of Oodaluvakai the heroine tells of a special distinction of the sulk. The hero has no fault; there is no lack in his love. Even so she says that sulking has a power. 'Vallathu' means that which has strength. What is that strength? It lies in 'avar alikku maaru': the power to make the love he shows still richer. 'Maaru' comes in the sense of a return, a counter-benefit.

Here the question arises why sulk when there is no fault. In truth she sulks not for a fault but for the savour of love. The soothing, the sweet words, the humility and the loving acts that the hero shows after the sulk are all things that would not be had without it. He is faultless; but to feel the full depth of his love she must sulk a little. This makes the sulk an instrument: an instrument for tasting love.

The heroine's voice in this verse is mingled with shyness and mischief. She knows her act is not proper; but she also knows its fruit is sweet. So she admits it openly and rejoices.

Commentators such as Parimelazhagar take it as the heroine saying this to her friend. She says that it is not because the hero's love is little but because it is full that she sulks, to enjoy it still more completely.

In our lives too, in very loving relationships small quarrels keep the relationship alive. A small sulk removes the weariness that arises when everything is simply fine. To do it with play and love is the art.

A story

The Pongal Pot and the Sulk

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Thanjavur lived a farmer named Sundaram with his wife Lakshmi. Sundaram was very good. He had never said a harsh word to Lakshmi, and he acted knowing her wishes. For that very reason Lakshmi could not figure out how to tease him.

On the morning of Thai Pongal a new pot went on the hearth in the courtyard. Sundaram was cutting sugarcane. Lakshmi kept watching the milk rising in the pot. Suddenly a mischievous thought came to her. She lifted her face a little and stood quietly.

Sundaram noticed. 'What is it, Lakshmi, your face is drooping? Have I done some wrong?' he asked. Lakshmi did not speak. Sundaram put down the cane, came near her and said, 'Tell me, what wrong? I will mend it.' She laughed inwardly.

Sundaram at once went and brought fresh jasmine. Then he gave her the sweetest part of the sugarcane. Then he wiped the rice flour that clung to her sari and said, 'If a smile does not come on your face, even if the pongal boils over my heart will not.' Lakshmi could hold back no longer. She burst out laughing.

'There is no fault; I sulked only to see how lovingly you would speak,' said Lakshmi. Sundaram scolded her fondly. The two shared the pongal that day. Both said that day's pongal had a savour of its own.
