Explanation

This is the last verse of the Thirukkural. With this one verse Valluvar brings to a close all three books: Aththuppaal, Porutppaal and Kamaththuppaal. The meaning of the verse is very simple: the sulk gives joy to love; but the sulk itself has joy only if, after it, the fulfilment of uniting and embracing is obtained. It is a chain of truths: the sulk is the way of joy; union is the fulfilment of joy.

The last word, 'perin', is noteworthy. 'Perin' means 'if one obtains'. That is, the sulk has joy only if the fulfilment of union and embrace is obtained. The sulk alone is not joy; it is the union after it that makes it joy. This last word also leaves the end of the book as an expectation.

That Valluvar closes his work with this sweet linking gives a deep hint. Virtue and wealth show the way of life; joy is the flowering of that life. This ending says without saying that the sweetness of the household is the final fruit of all the virtues.

Commentators see this chapter as the one that tells the distinction of the sulk, and this verse as its summary. The joy of the sulk and the full union that follows are bound together here.

In life too, quarrels may come; they become sweet when their final aim is to be united again. One who makes the quarrel itself the aim of life loses the relationship; one who aims at union makes even the quarrel a joy.

A story

The Serthi Sevai at Srirangam

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life. On the day of Panguni Uttiram at the Srirangam temple, devotees greatly honour the Serthi Sevai in which Lord Ranganatha and Goddess Ranganayaki appear together. This story is set against that scene.

In a village near Tiruchirappalli, Govindan and his wife Ranganayaki had led a household life for sixty years. In their life many small sulks had come and gone. Each time Govindan would be the first to come down; Ranganayaki would laugh and accept him. In their home sulk and union came by turns and grew their love.

Every year for Panguni Uttiram the two walked to Srirangam to have darshan of the Serthi Sevai. That year they were past eighty. The crowd was very dense. Govindan stood holding Ranganayaki's hand.

When Ranganatha and the Goddess gave darshan in the same hall, the crowd bowed with folded hands. Ranganayaki said in a soft voice, 'How many times I sulked with you, how many times you soothed me.' Govindan said, 'Without sulk and union, how would these sixty years have been sweet?' The two looked at the Serthi Sevai with a smile.

Returning from the temple that day, Ranganayaki said, 'Shall we come next year?' Govindan said, 'We shall; and then too you will have sulked about something, and I shall soothe you.' Ranganayaki laughed. Their life showed simply that a life in which sulk and union are joined is joy.
