The Dread of Mendicancy · Iravachcham

This chapter holds that earning and eating without stretching out the hand to others is the highest self-respect, and that the shame of asking melts the tongue and the heart. Even when asking cannot be avoided, Valluvar counsels never to go to those who conceal and refuse.

Introduction

The seventh chapter of the Kudiyiyal, Iravachcham, is the reverse side of the preceding chapter on asking. In 'Iravu' Valluvar said that asking of the worthy without humiliation can be beautiful; here he sings of the dread of asking and the height of earning one's meal without begging. 'Iravachcham' means fear of asking; it is not cowardly fear but a fear that guards self-respect.

The opening is very firm: even before one who gives gladly like the eyes themselves, not asking is ten million times more worthy. That is, not extending a hand even to the finest donor is worth crores. This may seem to clash with the thought of the previous chapter; but there he spoke of the code for unavoidable times, and here he speaks of the code for the ideal state.

The middle verses elaborate this ideal. He utters a harsh curse that if the creator of the world had ordained that people live by begging, he himself should wander and perish; he says that the resolve to end one's poverty by begging is the hardest of hardness; that the dignity of not begging even when without place is too vast for the whole world to hold; that even thin gruel earned by one's own labour is sweet; and that even to beg water for a cow is a humiliation for the tongue.

The closing section places a plea for when asking is unavoidable: this is the one thing I ask of all who beg, 'do not ask of those who conceal'. The boat called asking will split if it strikes the rock of concealing, says Valluvar in a poetic image. The very word 'no' from a concealer, he says, can make the seeker's life leave him. In today's society we need to recall again the dignity of living by labour. Only when work, education and livelihood chances are open to all does asking become needless. At the same time it is our duty to help, without scorn, those who come in distress. Only when these two views are joined does the chapter appear in full.

The meaning of 'iravachcham' must be seen deeply. This is not a chapter that degrades seekers. Our tradition honours renunciants who live on alms and devotees who receive annadhanam. What Valluvar points out is that one who can work should not take living at others' mercy as an easy way, and that when asking becomes a trade, human worth declines. Commentators mostly explain it as a code of self-respect.

Chapter story

Yudhishthira and the Akshaya Patra

This is the story of Yudhishthira's forest life from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. The Pandavas, having lost their kingdom at dice, spent twelve years in the forest. When they stayed in the Kamyaka forest many brahmins followed them. Yudhishthira wished to support them without fail; but how to feed so many in a forest?

Yudhishthira had been a king. He could not bring himself to beg food from others for these brahmins. His family pride and his dharma gave no room for it. He told his worry to his preceptor Dhaumya. Dhaumya advised him to worship the Sun god.

Yudhishthira, standing in the water on the Ganga bank, fasting and keeping vow, recited the hundred and eight names of the Sun that Dhaumya taught. The Sun god, pleased, appeared before him and gave a copper vessel. 'For twelve years the food in this will not run short until Draupadi has eaten,' he blessed. That was the Akshaya Patra.

From then on Draupadi would eat only after the brahmins, guests and her husbands had all eaten. After she ate, the vessel stayed empty for that day. Thus without stretching out a hand, by the grace of dharma, they continued their hospitality.

One day, at Duryodhana's instigation, the sage Durvasa came with ten thousand disciples; Draupadi had just finished eating. The vessel was empty. She prayed to Krishna. Krishna came, ate a single leaf of greens stuck to the vessel, and said, 'May the whole world be satisfied.' The disciples of Durvasa, who had gone to bathe in the river, felt full and slipped away.

In this history Yudhishthira is the image of the dread of begging. Though a former king living in forest poverty, he got food by penance without stretching a hand to others. Without losing self-respect he fed others. His penance became labour that bore his duty.

The beauty of this history lies in Yudhishthira's inner struggle. He had no heart to abandon the brahmins; nor did his mind allow him to beg and receive. The path he chose between them was penance. By his own strength, devotion and dharma he sought to meet the need. The dread of begging that Valluvar speaks of refers to this high self-respect. Though he was in poverty, that poverty did not lower his dignity.

Draupadi's role is also notable. The secret of the Akshaya Patra lies in the rule that she eats last. The vessel was useful in the hands of one with the humility and compassion to eat after others. In the crisis when Durvasa came she thought of the Lord without fear. That Krishna satisfied the whole world with a single leaf of greens is the deep truth of giving: food does not diminish in a sharing heart. In our lives too, sharing what we earn by labour is the way to fullness.

Key lessons

  • Living without stretching a hand, even before a generous donor, is ten million times higher.
  • Even simple food that comes of one's own labour is sweet.
  • Asking should not be taken as an easy way; protecting self-respect is the code.
  • Even when asking cannot be avoided, one should not ask of those who conceal.
  • The seeker's life droops at a word of refusal, so refusal must be gentle.
