Explanation

This verse is a lovely proof of Valluvar's poetic skill in simile. He pictures begging as a boat, 'emaappil', unprotected, without safeguard. When that boat strikes the rock named 'karavu' it splits and sinks. 'Karavu' is concealing, saying 'no' though one is able to give. The seeker's state is like a sea voyage. He has no strong ship, only a simple boat. He is in no state to overcome the waves and wind of the sea. Only the waves of the donors' compassion can bring him to shore. But when the rock of concealing appears, the boat breaks without protection.

A subtle link lies here: the boat's lack of protection is the seeker's loss of self-respect. He is not sailing in the strong ship of his own labour but has boarded the small boat of others' favour. So one single refusal shatters his life. The hidden meaning is that labour is the safe ship.

The lesson we learn: a life that rests on asking is always full of peril. Building a firm livelihood of our own is safety. Also, when we are in a position to give, we must see that our refusal does not become the rock that breaks their boat. The simile of a sea voyage was familiar to the Tamils. From the Sangam age they were sea-going traders who knew well the danger of rocks. So Valluvar's simile matched their experience. The word 'pakku vidum' lets us almost hear the sound of the boat cracking.

A story

The Sea Gives Way

This is a scene from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. To rescue Sita, Rama came with the vanara army to the southern shore on his way to Lanka. There was no way across the sea. He prayed to Varuna, the deity of the sea, lying on darbha grass on the shore and doing penance for three days.

Rama was a warrior, yet he first asked for the way in peace. Though he waited three days Varuna did not appear. The waves of the sea struck the rocks as before. The sea did not heed the plea of the begging Rama.

Then Rama's eyes reddened with anger. 'To one who asked humbly there is no answer; so I shall dry this sea,' he said and took up his bow. As he fixed the arrow the sea surged. The world shook.

At once Varuna appeared in fear: 'Rama, my nature is depth; do not dry me up. Make use of the vanara Nala in your army; if he builds a bridge I shall bear it.' So the Setu bridge was built under Nala's lead.

In this story we see the boat of begging striking the rock of the sea's concealment. Rama asked for three days to no avail, but he did not falter. By his own strength he made his own way.

The story tells us we may ask; but when refusal comes we need the resolve to make a path trusting our own strength. Dependence is danger; one's own strength is the safeguard.
