The Pre-marital love · Thakaiyananguruththal

This chapter sings of the lover's bewilderment at first sight of his beloved, praising the power of her eyes and the beauty of her modesty. It is the poetry of the first glimpse in the akam tradition.

Introduction

The first chapter of the Kamattuppal, Thagai Anangurutthal, opens the Kaaviyal, the stage of pre-marital love. After the Aram and Porul sections spoke of the nation and the household, the Inbattuppal sings of the third purushartha, kama, the joy of love. Valluvar does not dismiss it as low; he sees it as an excellent part of a life set within the bounds of dharma. So the verses here are in the cultured, poetic akam tradition.

'Thagai' is the quality joining beauty and character; 'anangurutthal' is troubling the mind with the divine beauty called anangu. When the lover first sees the beloved he is bewildered whether she is a goddess, a peahen or a human woman. This bewilderment is the opening of the chapter. In the following verses her glance strikes his mind like an army, like Death, like a doe. The eyes are the hero of this chapter.

In the akam tradition 'kalavu' is love before marriage. It is especially honoured in Tamil literary tradition. Epic loves such as Murugan and Valli, Rama and Sita, Dushyanta and Shakuntala are sung in this same tradition. So it is natural to read this chapter alongside our Puranic and epic scenes of love. There is a lovely subtlety in this chapter. Valluvar says the beloved's beauty shows not in her ornaments but in her modesty and innocence. The view that true beauty lies in natural character raises a woman's worth. He closes the chapter comparing that love gives joy even to the one who merely looks, while the joy of wine is for the drinker alone.

In reading these verses we should appreciate their similes, subtleties of feeling and beauty of words. All is in the language of poetry. It is best to understand them not literally but as the symbols of akam poetry. Poets such as Kamban, Kalidasa and Arunagirinathar expressed the same feeling in their songs.

If we look at the structure of the chapter, a lovely growth appears. Bewilderment in the first verse; the impact of the look in the second; the metaphor of Death for the eyes in the third to fifth; the veiling of the eyebrows in the sixth; the elephant simile in the seventh; the fall of the lover's valour in the eighth; the needlessness of ornaments in the ninth; the philosophy of the joy of love in the tenth. Thus feeling rises step by step and ends in thought.

Chapter story

Murugan and Valli

This is the love story of Murugan and Valli told in the Tamil tradition, in the Kanda Puranam and the Valli Thirumanam. At the foot of the Tiruttani hill the hunter-chief Nambirajan lived with his daughter Valli. Valliammai, tradition says, is called the daughter of Vishnu; she was born in the womb of a doe and raised by the hunter-chief.

Valli kept watch over the millet field and drove away parrots. Singing 'Aalolam, aalolam', she would sling stones to chase the parrots. Hearing that song and her voice, tradition says, Lord Murugan was drawn to her.

Murugan came to the millet field as a young hunter. Seeing Valli's beauty he stood bewildered. 'Who are you? A goddess, a peahen, a human woman?' arose such a state in his heart. He tried to speak to her. But she moved away shyly. When her father and relatives came near, the tale says, Murugan became a Vengai tree and vanished.

The next day he came as an old brahmin or hunter and asked Valli for food and water. She gave kindly. When at last he opened his heart, Valli blushed. At that time, tradition says, Ganesha came in the form of an elephant and frightened her, and in fear she clung to Murugan.

At last Valli and Murugan realised their true love. Murugan showed his divine form. Nambirajan consented to their marriage. The wedding of Valli and Murugan took place at Tanigai. Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh even today hails Murugan as 'Valli-manaalan', the bridegroom of Valli.

This history is the life of the chapter 'Thagai Anangurutthal'. The beauty the lover sees lies not in show but in natural character; her modesty is its radiance; his bewilderment is the beginning of love. The beauty and virtue of Valli, a hunter's daughter, bewildered the god Murugan himself.

The love of Valli and Murugan is much honoured in Tamil tradition. It joins the kalavu life of the akam tradition with the Purana. Murugan, the god of the Kurinji land, uniting with Valli, the daughter of that same land, shows the nature of the land and the nature of man as one. Murugan has another consort, Deivayanai, who is of the celestial world. Valli is the earth's daughter; tradition says that the two stand for his two powers of grace, Kriya shakti and Iccha shakti. That is, Valli is Iccha shakti and Deivayanai Kriya shakti, they say.

Arunagirinathar in his Kandar Anubhuti and Thiruppugazh sings this love as a metaphor for the relation between soul and God. Valli is the soul; Murugan comes seeking it. The deep meaning is that God claims the soul only after crossing many obstacles and trials. So the kalavu love is not merely worldly but also a spiritual metaphor.

Valli's life is full of modesty, simplicity and love. She is beautiful not in ornament but in character. Murugan took many disguises to seek her, which is proof that true love makes even God stoop. This is a lovely illustration of Valluvar's verse 1089, 'what ornament does she need who has the fawn-like innocent look and modesty?'
