Recognition of the Signs · Kuripparidhal

This chapter subtly sings how lovers share their hearts through small signs: a glance, a faint smile, a lowered gaze or a feigned indifference. It reveals the beauty of the language the eyes speak without words.

Introduction

Kurippariadal is the chapter on lovers perceiving each other's hidden signs. The second chapter of the Kaaviyal, it follows Thagai Anangurutthal. The earlier one showed the lover's bewilderment; here we see both hearts slowly drawing near. This nearness is shown not by words but by glances, smiles, a bowed head and small acts of pretence.

The opening of the chapter is subtle: 'irunokku ivalunkan ullathu', says the lover. Her eye holds two looks: one causes the ailment and the other is the cure for that ailment. That subtlety is the beloved's heart's hint. In the following verses he notes many signs: her stealthy glance, her looking and then bowing, her looking at the ground when he looks, her smiling when he looks away.

The middle verses show a pretence mixed with love and sulking. Even when she speaks as a stranger her words reveal a loving heart; a seemingly angry look and a small word are the marks of love. Giving a general glance as if unacquainted is an art special to lovers' eyes. In this way Valluvar records the indirect language of love beautifully.

The last verse gives the essence of the chapter: when eye meets eye in accord, the words of the mouth are of no use. If hearts have joined, language is needless. That is the highest state of love. The whole chapter celebrates the beauty of love's silent language.

Our epics show the same subtlety. In Kamban's Ramayana the single line 'Annalum nokkinan avalum nokkinal', 'The Lord looked and she looked', conveys the first glance of Rama and Sita. Even Kalidasa's Shakuntala and Vyasa's Damayanti speak their hearts through glances. So this chapter shows a deep feeling of our culture. The word 'kurippu' is central to the Tamil akam tradition, where the honour lies in hinting without saying and in understanding without being told. The lover hesitates to declare himself and the beloved hides her heart in modesty; it is in the silence between them that the eyes and the face speak. Commentators read the chapter as the lover speaking to his own heart and rejoicing over her signs. Each verse is a small scene, and together they show the gentle movements of affection in order. We can still see this soft language in village festivals and temple courtyards. Reading the signs, finally, means understanding another's wish with respect, never overriding it.

Chapter story

The Lord Looked

This is the first meeting of Rama and Sita told by Kamban in his Iramavataram, in the Balakandam, in sections such as the Ezhuchi Padalam and the Kolam Kaan Padalam. Vishwamitra led Rama and Lakshmana to the city of Mithila. Janaka, king of Mithila, had arranged a svayamvara for his daughter Sita; the condition was that whoever bent and strung Shiva's bow would be her husband.

Rama and Lakshmana walked with the sage along the street of Mithila. At that time Sita was on a palace balcony with her friends. She saw the handsome youth passing in the street. Rama too looked up. In one line, 'Annalum nokkinan avalum nokkinal', Kamban tells that first glance.

Kamban goes on to sing the power of that glance wonderfully: when their eyes joined, 'the two exchanged their hearts', he says. Without a single word their hearts became one. This is why that line stands beyond time in the Tamil literary tradition.

After that glance Sita bowed her head in modesty. Rama too controlled his heart and walked on with his guru. Valluvar's state 'she looked, and then she bowed' becomes a scene here. She looked and bowed. In those two acts her whole love was revealed.

Later in the svayamvara hall, when Rama tried to lift and string Shiva's bow, it broke. Janaka rejoiced and gave Sita in marriage to Rama. It is notable that in Valmiki's Ramayana they first meet in the hall itself; Kamban has added the street scene by his poetic skill.

This story is the finest illustration of the verse 'when eye with eye agrees, the words of the mouth are of no use'. Without any word they understood each other. That is perceiving the sign.

Kamban describes Mithila as a city full of learning and the arts, and in that lovely setting this small incident changed two lives. Rama was walking modestly behind his guru, and Sita was a shy young woman raised in her father's palace. Neither abandoned decorum, yet each shared the heart through a look. This is just the beauty the akam tradition prizes: a feeling that never crosses its limits but runs deep. Valluvar's 'two looks' can be seen here as well: one glance of Sita created the ailment of love in Rama's heart, and her other glance was the comfort for it. Until the svayamvara they had to wait, and even in that waiting the memory of that single look sustained them. This is why the story is the finest example of perceiving the sign.
