Explanation

In this verse the lover mentions another kind of pretence of the beloved. Sometimes she says a small harsh word to him. She even looks at him as at an enemy. But he knows that there is no hatred in that word. 'Seraaach chirusol' means a small word spoken without hatred.

Some take 'seraa' as 'not angered'. However taken, the sense is that though the form of the word is harsh the heart is tender. The enemy-like look and the harsh word are pretences lovers make to hide their hearts. To think them real enmity is ignorance, while to know them as signs of love is wisdom.

This is a subtle language of love. Sometimes those with great love try to hide it and speak harshly. One reason is the fear that showing affection openly would reveal their modesty. So an act like anger becomes the armour of affection. The lover understands this and smiles. This is the depth of perceiving signs, and his understanding honours her modesty. The word 'utraar' here means those who are very near, and 'uraaarponru' means pretending to be unconnected. So Valluvar means the kind of pretence of distance that appears in the midst of closeness. To one who does not understand it, it is painful, and to one who does, it is sweet. Since the lover understands, his mind becomes calm. Seeing the love within the anger is the perceiving of signs in this verse.

A story

Satyabhama's Sulk

Among Krishna's consorts, Rukmini and Satyabhama are especially honoured in the Bhagavata Purana, the Vishnu Purana and the Harivamsa. The tale is told that Narada once gave Krishna a parijata flower from the heavens, and Krishna gave it to Rukmini. On learning this, Satyabhama sulked.

She spoke as if angry and looked at Krishna as if she hated him. But Krishna at once knew there was no hatred in her harsh word. He understood that her sulk came from an excess of love. To appease her, the Puranas say, he brought the parijata tree itself from the heavens to her garden.

Krishna's understanding is the important thing here. He did not take her sulk for real anger. He saw the love within it. Her fury was for him a sign of affection. The verse 'a small unhating word and an enemy-like look are the signs of near ones pretending to be strangers' fits this scene.

Though the Puranas differ in form, the lesson of the tale is one: where there is love, even a sulk becomes beautiful, and to understand it is the lover's wisdom. Since some details in this tale vary from text to text, we take only the general meaning here. Like Krishna who understood Satyabhama's sulk, we too must know the love within another's anger. The Puranas make clear his love.
