The Reading of the Signs · Kuripparivuruththal

This chapter sings of the subtlety by which lovers read each other's hearts from signs that say nothing aloud: a glance, a half-smile, a slipping bangle. Valluvar shows with grace how the marks of love show through even when one tries to hide them.

Introduction

The name of this chapter, in the Karpiyal of the Kamathuppaal, is Kurippu-arivuruthal. 'Kurippu' is the thought of the heart that is spoken without being spoken: the sign shown by the face, a glance, a smile, a gait, the loosening of ornaments. 'Arivuruthal' is making known, or coming to know, that sign. In the Tamil akam tradition lovers do not speak their hearts openly; they speak by the eyes and by hints. This chapter sings of the delicacy of that silent language.

Several speakers appear in the chapter. In the first verse the hero looks into the heroine's eyes and says that she tries to hide and cannot. In the second to the fifth verses he guesses the love in her heart from her modesty and her smile; while she is silent, he speaks to her friend or to himself. In the sixth to the eighth verses the heroine tells her friend of the hero's hints and of the changes that show in her own body. In the ninth verse the friend tells the hero the heroine's sign, and in the tenth the hero marvels at the grace of that sign. Thus love circles among the three.

The images Valluvar gives for hints are very fine. Like the thread seen within a crystal bead, like the fragrance within a bud, the message of the heart shows outside. As the thread through the bead is hidden yet visible, so the heroine's hidden love is plain in her ornaments and her smile. As the fragrance within a bud reaches us before the flower opens, a message dwells even in the bud of her smile. These images join delicacy and sweetness.

What the chapter says to our life today is that there is a language beyond words. The habit of listening to the changed face, the tone of the voice and the meaning of silence in those close to us grows relationships. At the same time, since over-guessing at hints also brings confusion, we may sense beneath it the need for a balance in which we also speak lovingly and directly. Hence reading signs is an art of its own; those who learn it gain gentleness and understanding in their relationships.

Chapter story

Valli's Signs in the Millet Field

This is part of the story of Murugan and Valli told in the Kanda Puranam and in the Tamil devotional tradition of Murugan.

In the forest of Vallimalai, Valli grew up as the daughter of the hunter chief Nambirajan. She kept watch over the millet field, driving off parrots and other birds. Her beauty and simplicity were spoken of everywhere in the forest. One day Lord Murugan, tradition says, came to that field in the form of a hunter and saw her.

When the hunter tried to speak to Valli, she said nothing out of modesty. Her companions playfully drove him away. But Valli's eyes, just once, glanced at him and dropped. Though her lips were silent, that glance and the faint smile that spread on her face told Murugan the message. 'Though she tries to hide, her eye does not hide,' he understood.

The story goes on that Murugan then came as an aged hunter and asked for water for his thirst and millet flour for his hunger. Valli gave him food lovingly. When he told her of his love, she pretended anger, but her face showed joy. Then a wild elephant suddenly came, and Valli, frightened, clung to him. Tradition praises Ganesha himself as having come as the elephant to help in this event.

At last Murugan appeared in his true form and wedded Valli. Tradition says that Valli and Murugan lived happily on the hill of Tiruttani.

The language of the eye and the fragrance of the smile that Valluvar speaks of are clearly seen in Valli's story. Without speaking a single word she made her heart known to Murugan. The tale reminds us that reading signs is the quality of listening with respect to another's silence.

The Kanda Puranam and Arunagirinathar's Tiruppugazh honour Valli as the beloved consort of Murugan. Devotees believe that Murugan came of his own accord to her simplicity, her forest nature and her modesty. In this belief lies the deep sense that the Divine comes down to the love of a simple heart.

At Tiruttani, Vallimalai and Tirupparankundram the tale is still remembered together with worship. The wedding form in which Murugan and Valli appear together brings devotees great joy. Each event in Valli's story is itself a sign: the glance, the smile, the giving of food, the clinging in fear are marks of love speaking without words.

Tradition praises that Murugan accepted Valli not only by her signs but by her loving heart. The small glance that began in the millet field bloomed into a divine wedding.
