Pouting · Pulavi

This chapter shows that the small sulk between lovers is the salt of love. Through the voices of the friend, the heroine and the hero, Valluvar sweetly sings the flavour of sulking and its limit, and the grace of love that senses the sulk and soothes it.

Introduction

The name of this chapter, in the Karpiyal of the Kamathuppaal, is Pulavi. Pulavi is the small quarrel that arises between lovers, the sulk. It is not a fight; it is not enmity; it is a gentle anger born of love, a playful turning away of the face. In the previous chapter the heroine sulked with her own heart; in this chapter the sulk with the hero is sung. From here the three chapters Pulavi, Pulavi Nunukkam and Oodaluvakai show sulking at length as an art of its own.

At the beginning of the chapter the friend gives the heroine a charming counsel: 'Do not embrace him at once; sulk a little and let us see how he suffers.' It is not a trick but a game that adds flavour to love. In the next verse the nature of pulavi is compared to salt. If salt in food is in measure, there is taste; if too much, the food is spoiled. So if sulking is in measure, love is sweet; if long, it turns bitter.

In the middle of the chapter the voices of the heroine and the hero alternate. She tells him that to leave unembraced a wife who sulks is like giving more pain to one already in pain, like cutting the root of a withered creeper. On the other side the hero feels within himself that love without sulking is like unripe fruit, and that there is a small pain in sulking. Water is sweet in the shade, he says; and sulking is sweet in one who truly loves.

At the end of the chapter the hero admits his weakness with humour: that his heart wants to be united even with one who lets him wither in her sulk is the wonder of desire. Thus Valluvar beautifully shows the nature of love in which sulking and union are woven together.

The lesson of this chapter applies even today. Small differences in relationships are natural; handled in measure and with love they deepen the bond. But if they last, they dry up love itself. So both in sulking and in soothing there must be art.

Chapter story

The Game of Dice on Kailasa

This is the tale of the game of dice between Shiva and Parvati, told in various forms in the Shaiva Puranic tradition and in the oral stories of devotees in Tamil Nadu. Its details vary somewhat from tradition to tradition; here we tell only its basic idea, with respect.

One day on Mount Kailasa, Lord Shiva and Parvati began to play dice. It began as a game. As the play went on, the two teased each other with humour. In the course of losing, Shiva staked his ornaments one by one, says the tale.

The game went on long. A difference of opinion arose between them over who had won. Parvati said the victory was hers; Shiva denied it. An argument begun in play grew a little sharp. Parvati turned her face away and, in a sulk, went and sat alone on one side. Lord Shiva too moved a little apart and sat.

For a while Kailasa was quiet. Nandi and the ganas watched without understanding. But the heart of each sought the other. Parvati looked secretly at Shiva; Shiva too looked at her. A faint smile appeared on both faces.

Lord Shiva went to her and said tenderly, 'In the game there is no victory or defeat; we two are one.' Parvati's sulk melted, and she smiled. The two were united again. So the sulk made their love still more beautiful.

The Shaiva tradition takes this tale as a sweet expression of the truth that Shiva and Shakti are inseparable. In many temples this game of dice is seen in sculpture and painting.

The salt-savour of pulavi that Valluvar speaks of shows in this story too: the small sulk did not spoil love but made it sweet.

The tale holds one more charm. Though the two are one, the thin veil of a sulk falls between them only to make them feel their love more deeply. When the veil lifts, the face that appears is brighter than before. In Tamil homes elders sometimes watch the small quarrel of a husband and wife and say with a smile, 'Even on Kailasa there is sulking; why wonder that it is in our house?' In that saying one sees the Tamil mind, which does not count a sulk as a fault but accepts it as natural.

What the story teaches is this: when a sulk comes, do not fear it or resent it. If the mind can take it as play, it will polish love without breaking it. The smile that rose in that evening on Kailasa is the ending of pulavi, and it is the ending Valluvar desires. Those who know how long a sulk may be held, and when it must be soothed, know the art of love.

Key lessons

  • A small sulk is the salt of love; in measure it sweetens a relationship.
  • If sulking lasts, love dries up; so the art of soothing is also needed.
  • To leave unsoothed one who sulks is to add pain to one already pained.
  • Sulking and union are two sides of love; without one the taste of the other is not complete.
  • Handling a sulk with play and gentleness deepens relationships.
