Explanation

The previous verse sang of the gift of rain. This one shows the reverse: what happens when rain fails? 'Virineer' means the broad waters, the ocean. Water surrounds the world, yet seawater is neither fit to drink nor to raise a crop. So Valluvar's point is that even a world awash in water will starve if the rain does not come.

In the word 'poippin' there is the pain of disappointment. To 'fail' is to let down something that was trusted. People trust the rain, and when it does not come, that trust is broken. The phrase 'ulnindru utatrum pasi' goes deeper. Hunger does not strike from outside; it stands inside the body and wears it down quietly. In one phrase Valluvar places before us the suffering that melts a life from within, unseen.

Old Tamil literature has many records of drought and famine. In bad years villages were emptied and families migrated. Works like the Silappatikaram show scenes of a land withering in drought. This verse reads like a summary of such memories.

Even today, whenever the monsoon fails, food prices climb and farmers suffer. We may live in a city, but the rice on our plate comes from the rain falling on some village far away. Keeping that in mind gives us a sense of responsibility.

A story

Rishyashringa and the Rains of Anga

From the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana. Tradition says that once, in the reign of King Romapada of Anga, no rain fell for twelve years. Rivers dried, fields cracked, cattle died of thirst. Every day hungry people stood at the palace gate. The king called sages and learned brahmins and asked for a way out.

They said, "King, in the forest grows a young ascetic named Rishyashringa, son of the sage Vibhandaka. He has never seen any human being but his father. If he sets foot in your land, rain will fall." Romapada sent his ministers to bring the young ascetic respectfully to the city.

The moment he stepped on the border of Anga, the sky darkened. Thunder rolled, a cool wind blew and heavy rain began. The ground drank, rivers filled, and people sang and danced with joy. In gratitude the king gave his daughter Shanta in marriage to him and bowed before him.

The Ramayana adds that this same Rishyashringa later conducted the Putrakameshti sacrifice for King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, and tradition holds that the birth of Rama and his brothers followed from it.

In this episode, the hunger of the people and their revival when the rain arrived stand side by side. The people of Anga learned by experience what Valluvar means by 'hunger that stands within and torments'. For them the coming of rain was a second birth.
