Explanation

This verse tells both faces of rain in one line. Rain ruins, and rain also stands by the ruined and raises them up again. One can read it as drought on one side and flood on the other.

Commentators explain it in different ways. Some take 'ruining' as the failure of rain that destroys living things, and 'raising up' as the rain that returns and gives life again. Others read it as an excess of rain that causes flood and ruin, followed by the fertility it leaves behind. Neither reading harms the spirit of the verse; the centre is that rain is both the cause and the cure.

There is a subtle lesson for life here. The harm and the good that come to a person may spring from the same source. The same river that floods in one season and destroys, in another season leaves rich silt and gives plenty. The verse quietly says that the seed of recovery lies at the very centre of loss.

For us today it is a message of hope. Those who lost much in a flood or drought have not been finished for good; the same nature gives them another chance. If they have the will to use that chance and the support of society, the recovery is sure.

A story

The Fish Incarnation: A Seed in the Deluge

From the Bhagavata Purana and the Matsya Purana. Satyavrata, who became Manu, was one day performing his water-offering in a river when a tiny fish swam into his cupped hands. "King, save me; the bigger fish will eat me," it pleaded. Manu felt pity and put it in a pot. The fish grew until the pot was too small. He moved it to a pond, a river and a sea, one after another, and still it kept growing.

Manu realised it was no ordinary fish, and bowing asked, "Who are you?" The Lord Vishnu in fish form said, "In seven days the great deluge will come and the world will be flooded. A large boat will come to you. Take with you the seven sages, seeds of every kind and pairs of living beings."

On the seventh day the sea surged, the sky rained without pause, and the land vanished under water. The king boarded the boat as told. A great horned fish appeared; the boat was bound to its horn with the serpent Vasuki as rope, and it pulled the boat through the vast flood. It also guarded the Vedas in that time.

When the waters receded a new world began. From those seeds green life rose again. The very water that destroyed had carried the boat and the seeds, and made the road for a new beginning.

In this tale flood destroys, and the same flood lifts the boat and the seed that make renewal possible. It is a deep picture of the verse: the one that ruins and the one that stands by the ruined and raises them up are both the water.
