The Blessing of Rain · Vaansirappu

This chapter praises rain as the source of food and water for every living being and as the foundation on which even virtuous acts rest. Valluvar shows that when rain fails, hunger and poverty spread, and so he calls rain the nectar of the world.

Introduction

Vaansirappu, the second chapter of the Prologue section of the Kural, follows directly after the hymn to God. Having bowed to the first cause of all things, Valluvar turns to the rain, and the order is not an accident. If the divine is the ultimate support of life, rain is that support made visible as mercy. Without the drop that falls from the sky there is no ploughing, without ploughing there is no food, and without food virtue itself cannot stand. In ten couplets he joins this chain link by link.

The first verse calls rain amirtham, the nectar of immortality. Nectar is the drink that defeats death, and rain is what keeps living beings from dying, so the name fits. The following verses show both faces of rain. It nourishes as food and drink, and when it fails it returns as hunger and wastes the body. Verse fifteen compresses the two sides into one line: rain can ruin, and rain can also raise up those it has ruined.

This chapter is not a lesson in natural science but a lesson in gratitude. When the sixteenth verse says that without a falling drop you will not even see the head of a green blade of grass, it reminds us that the smallest creature depends on the sky. Verse seventeen says that even the vast ocean loses its richness if the cloud does not give back what it has taken. Without any technical vocabulary, Valluvar had seen the cycle in which the sea rises as vapour, becomes cloud and returns as rain. Verses eighteen and nineteen carry the argument into religious life: worship, festivals, charity and austerity cannot continue if the heavens withhold their gift. That is why a chapter about weather sits at the start of the book of virtue.

The closing verse lifts the idea to its highest point. The world cannot go on without water, and in the same way right conduct cannot go on without rain. Valluvar knew that it is useless to lecture on morals to someone whose stomach is empty. If virtue is to live, food and water must first reach everyone.

For us the lesson is sharper than ever. News about climate change, falling groundwater and polluted rivers arrives almost daily. Our ancestors worshipped the rain, and in doing so they neither wasted it nor fouled it. Vaansirappu asks the same of us: receive every drop with respect, store it, share it, and live within what the sky gives. That is the truest thanks we can offer to the rain.

Chapter story

The Hill of Govardhana and the Pride of Indra

From the Bhagavata Purana. Every year the cowherds of Vraja held a festival to Indra so that the rains would come. That year too, Nanda and the cowherds were piling up offerings of milk, curd and ghee. The boy Krishna watched and asked, "Father, who is all this preparation for?" Nanda replied, "Indra gives the rain. Only if we worship him will the grass grow and the cows give milk."

Vraja lay on the bank of the Yamuna, and the cowherds there had no great fields. Their wealth was their cattle. Each morning they let the calves loose to graze on the hill slopes and each evening they came home to milk them. When the grass flourished the milk grew, and when the milk grew, the butter and ghee grew. So the yearly worship of Indra, offered for rain, stood at the centre of their trust. It astonished everyone present that a child should be the first to dare question that custom.

Krishna smiled and said, "We are not ploughmen; we are herdsmen. Is it not Govardhana hill and its meadows that feed our cattle? It is true that the sky gives the rain. But it is this hill that receives the rain and turns it into grass for us. Let us thank it as well." The cowherds thought it over, and that year they offered a great feast and worship to the hill and to the cows.

When Indra heard of this, he was angry. He ordered his clouds to drown Vraja. Thunder, lightning and storm winds joined together and the rain poured for seven days without a pause. Cows, calves and people ran in terror to Krishna. He lifted the whole of Govardhana on the little finger of one small hand and held it like an umbrella. Everyone took shelter beneath it, and for seven days he did not tire.

For those seven days the people were afraid, yet there was also a strange calm beneath the hill. The children sat at the foot of it and listened to Krishna's flute. The cows lay down quietly. The elders whispered, "Who is he?" His smile was the only answer.

When the rain stopped on the seventh day, the cowherds came out from under the hill. Sunlight fell again on the green meadows. Krishna set the hill gently back in its place. There was no pride on his face, only his usual playful smile. Yashoda ran to him and hugged him. The cowherds did not forget their tradition, but they also learned that whoever gives, whoever he may be, must give without arrogance.

At last Indra's clouds were spent. He understood that his pride had been hollow. He came down from heaven, bowed to Krishna and asked forgiveness. The divine cow Kamadhenu also came and bathed Krishna with her milk, and from that day he was also called Govinda.

The story carries two lessons. No one can deny that rain is the water of life. But when the giver of rain becomes proud and crosses the limit, the very gift can turn into destruction. And the herdsmen learned that the hill, the land and the cow, which turn that rain into food, deserve to be cared for with gratitude.
