The Greatness of Ascetics · Neeththaar Perumai

This chapter describes the greatness of those who have mastered desire and walk the path of renunciation. Valluvar shows that the true glory that upholds the world is the strength to restrain the five senses, a heart full of compassion, and the power of a word spoken by one who is wholly disciplined.

Introduction

Neeththaar Perumai is the third chapter of the Prologue section. We have bowed to God and praised the rain; now Valluvar begins to honour the highest among human beings. 'Neeththaar' are those who have let go of their desires and attachments. In this same chapter they are also called 'thurandhaar', those who renounced, and 'saandror', the noble. We need not take the word to mean only someone who has walked out of household life. Anyone who sets attachment aside and stands firm in discipline belongs to the honour this chapter describes.

There is a reason this chapter sits at the beginning of the book of virtue. Virtue is not just a doctrine. If there were no one who showed it in their own life, it would be hard to believe in. The renunciants are such living proof. If rain is mercy coming from the sky, they are mercy walking on the earth. By honouring them, Valluvar tells us that whatever a society respects is what shapes its future.

The ten verses draw a portrait step by step. The first says that the scriptures exalt their greatness. The second says that this greatness cannot be measured. The third picks out those who have weighed this world and the next and chosen virtue. The fourth, fifth and seventh verses describe their strength through the image of the goad that controls an elephant, applied to the five senses. The sixth gives the yardstick: the great are those who do what is hard to do. The eighth speaks of the power of their word, the ninth of the fearfulness of their anger, and the tenth of the mark of their compassion.

One of the most vivid images in the chapter is the goad that tames the elephant. A huge, powerful animal is guided by a small hook; in the same way, Valluvar says, knowledge is the tool that leads the five senses. He does not say the senses are to be destroyed. His view is that they must be brought under the guidance of wisdom.

For today the lesson takes on new meaning. Advertisements and screens pull at our senses every minute. In such a world, to hold authority over one's own wishes is a rare strength. This chapter makes clear that renunciation is not running away to hide. It is the clarity that lets us rule our desires instead of being ruled by them.

Chapter story

Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi

From the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. In the court of King Janaka of Videha, the sage Yajnavalkya was honoured as a man of great wisdom. He had two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Maitreyi was a thoughtful woman who longed for the knowledge of Brahman; Katyayani was attached to household life. One day Yajnavalkya decided to leave the household and go to the forest.

He called his wives and said, "I am going to give up the household and take to renunciation. Before I go I will divide my property between the two of you." Katyayani accepted quietly. But Maitreyi thought for a while and then asked, "Venerable one, if this whole earth were filled with wealth and it were all mine, would I be immortal by it?"

Yajnavalkya answered gently, "No, Maitreyi. Your life would be like the life of those who have wealth. There is no hope of immortality through riches." Maitreyi said at once, "What shall I do with that by which I cannot become immortal? Tell me what you know."

Maitreyi's question is simple, but its depth is boundless. She knew well that wealth makes life comfortable. At the same time she understood that comfort and fulfilment are not the same. The Upanishad explains that immortality here does not mean a body that never dies; it means giving up the clinging to perishable things and knowing the imperishable truth. Her question shows the great wisdom of a householder.

Yajnavalkya was delighted by her thirst. "You, who were dear to me, ask now for something even dearer. Sit down, and I will explain." And he taught her about the Self. He explained that a husband is dear not for the husband's sake but for the sake of the Self, and so it is with wife, children and wealth. He ended by saying that he who knows the Self knows all.

When the teaching ended, Yajnavalkya went to the forest. Maitreyi's heart was filled with peace. The Upanishad still tells us how high is the greatness of one who gives up wealth and fame, and how high the courage of the woman who sought a knowledge higher than all that.

In the Upanishadic tradition this dialogue stands as a celebrated witness to women's search for wisdom. The Brihadaranyaka also records that in the assembly of those days women scholars such as Gargi Vachaknavi boldly put questions to Yajnavalkya. Renunciation, the tradition shows, is not hiding away but putting questions to the truth, and the housewives and the sages of that age showed it together.

The greatness of renunciants that Valluvar speaks of is not only their giving up of clothes, property and fame. It is the heart that seeks something higher than those, and this story shows that heart in both husband and wife.

One of the sayings Yajnavalkya gave her is still remembered: the Self is to be seen, to be heard about, to be reflected upon, and to be deeply meditated on. This sequence describes the stages of learning. Wisdom grows through hearing, thinking and clarity. His renunciation was not mere withdrawal but a journey towards this deep search.
