Explanation

This verse sets down a large claim: among all excellent things, the greatness of one who stands in discipline and has renounced is the highest. As evidence Valluvar does not offer his own opinion; he offers the settled conclusion of the 'panuval', the treatises. That is, he presents it not as one person's view but as the result reached by the wise after long inquiry. The word 'thunivu' shows that the conclusion is firm.

In the phrase 'ozhukkaththu neeththaar', discipline and renunciation are joined, and that matters. Renunciation that is only a costume, or an escape from life, earns no greatness. It is renunciation resting on right conduct that deserves honour. More than those who have left their homes, 'neeththaar' here means those who have left the desires of the heart. The verse therefore uses inner purity, not outward costume, as its yardstick.

'Vizhuppam' means distinction or excellence. The world considers wealth, power, learning and fame as high things. Yet the verse says the greatness of the one who has loosened attachment to all these is higher still. The rest can all diminish with time, while discipline and non-attachment do not.

The verse also makes us ask whom we honour today. A society that celebrates only film stars and the very rich overlooks the quiet people of integrity. The honest teacher, the volunteer who helps with no thought of self, and the one who works without attachment all deserve our respect, Valluvar reminds us.

A story

Shuka's Renunciation

This tale comes from the Devi Bhagavata and the Mahabharata. Shuka, son of the sage Vyasa, is praised by the Puranas as one who was full of wisdom from birth. Even as a child he showed no interest in worldly life. After learning the Vedas from his father, tradition says, he resolved to give up every worldly tie.

One day Shuka left home. He had no clothes on his body, nothing in his hand and no desire in his mind. As he walked through the forest, celestial maidens were bathing in a lake. Shuka passed by. They felt no shame at all, because they understood that in his pure mind there was no distinction of man and woman.

Unable to bear the separation from his son, Vyasa followed in search. When he reached the same lake, the maidens hurriedly covered themselves in modesty. Surprised, Vyasa asked, "You did not feel shy before my young son, yet you do before me, an old man. Why?" They replied quietly, "Sage, in your eyes there is still a difference between man and woman. In your son's eyes there is none."

Vyasa stood with bowed head. Then he called out aloud, "Son!" Shuka did not turn. But, the Purana says, all the trees of the forest answered in his stead, for he had become one with all beings. He had passed beyond being the son of one father and had become the heart of every living thing.

Tradition adds that Shuka later recited the Bhagavata to King Parikshit. In this story renunciation is not in dress or appearance; the greatness of Shuka is a pure heart without attachment or distinction. The episode is a witness to why the scriptures set the renunciant at the summit.
