Explanation

The verse is built on two images. The first is the elephant and the goad. The five senses are as headstrong as a rutting elephant; the goad that holds them is 'uran', the firmness of mind that comes from wisdom. To control an elephant one does not need a larger body, only a small iron hook and the skill to use it. In the same way, Valluvar says, firm resolve and clarity are enough to check the rush of the senses.

The second image is the seed. 'Varan ennum vaippu' is the excellent state, liberation. The first seed to sprout in that field is the one who has mastered his senses. A seed is small, yet a great tree grows from it. The image shows how even a small effort to restrain the senses leads, through its fruit, to a great life.

'Or aindhum' refers to the five senses: touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing. Each pulls a person toward its own pleasure. Taste, light, touch, sound and smell are all good in themselves; the trouble starts when one becomes their slave. The clarity of the verse is that control does not mean destruction but guidance.

Today there is a danger of becoming slaves to many sense pleasures such as phones, food and screens. We need not withdraw from them completely, but the goad that decides when and how much must be in our own hands. That small self-restraint is the seed of a great life.

A story

Young Lakshmana's Gaze

From the Kishkindha Kanda of the Ramayana. When Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, came to Mount Rishyamukha, they met Sugriva there and the two sides made friendship. Sugriva and his ministers brought out a bundle of cloth from a cave. He said these were the ornaments a woman had dropped when a demon was carrying her away in a chariot through the sky.

Rama took the jewels in his hands. At the sight of them his eyes filled with tears and his heart trembled. Unable to bear his grief, he said, "Lakshmana, are these Sita's ornaments? Look and tell me."

Lakshmana answered quietly, "Brother, I do not know these bracelets or this necklace, because I never lifted my eyes to look at my sister-in-law's face. But these anklets that were on her feet I know well, for I bowed at her feet every day."

Through fourteen years of forest life in one hut with his brother and sister-in-law, Lakshmana had never raised his gaze above her feet. With that answer Rama, and everyone present, understood it. Sugriva looked at him in wonder. In Rama's tears, pride was mingled with grief.

The poets of the Ramayana have honoured this restraint of Lakshmana generation after generation. Tradition says that through the years of exile he even gave up sleep, standing guard day and night over his brother and sister-in-law. Restraint was no burden to him; love itself took the form of restraint. Restraint born of love lasts longer than restraint forced by compulsion.

This restraint was like a penance performed every day. Lakshmana was not a man without desires, but pure love and a sense of duty were the goad that led his senses. He refused to look at or want anything that was not his. One may say it is the living example Valmiki gives of the verse 'the goad called uran guards the five'.
