Explanation

This verse shows the limitless through a simple comparison. Can anyone count how many people have died in the world so far? No. In the same way, says Valluvar, the greatness of those who have renounced cannot be measured. 'Thunaikkoorin' means 'if one tries to give a measure by comparison'. The inner sense is that this is a greatness that goes beyond whatever measure one tries to give.

There is a subtlety in the comparison. The number of the dead has been growing since time began; whenever we start counting, a new addition arrives. In the same way the greatness of renunciants keeps taking new forms in every age and growing. It does not stop at the count of the wise we happen to know today.

Some take the comparison in a negative sense: just as counting the dead is pointless, so is measuring at all. The traditional commentators, however, read it as a graceful way to suggest unbounded greatness. In both readings the point is the same: this greatness cannot be contained in a measure.

There is a lesson here for our own lives. We have grown used to measuring everything in numbers and rankings: marks, income, followers. But a person's purity and sacrifice cannot be measured by such yardsticks. The verse reminds us that some values stand beyond measurement.

A story

Markandeya and the Ocean of Dissolution

From the Bhagavata Purana and the Markandeya tradition. The sage's son Markandeya, child of Mrikandu, was fated to die at the age of sixteen. As Yama cast his noose, Markandeya, ever devoted to Shiva, embraced the Shiva linga. The Lord appeared, subdued Yama and, tradition says, saved Markandeya with the boon of remaining a sixteen-year-old youth for ever. The event is still remembered at Tirukkadaiyur.

In the long life he received, Markandeya performed severe austerities. The Bhagavata says he saw the world arise and dissolve many times. Once, when the whole world was drowned in the deluge, he swam and wandered in that boundless ocean. There was darkness everywhere and water everywhere. For a very long time he wandered there.

At last he saw a great banyan tree. On one of its leaves lay a small child, sucking its toe. When the child drew in a breath, Markandeya was pulled into its belly. There he saw the sky, the earth, the seas and the sages, all of it. When the breath went out he fell again into the ocean. He understood that the child was Vishnu himself.

Though he lived through many ages, the greatness he came to know seemed to Markandeya like a speck beside the Lord's infinitude. In the same way the greatness of his austerity stood as something the world could not measure however long it counted.

This scene from the Bhagavata astonishes even a sage who has crossed many ages. However high knowledge and austerity may rise, it reminds us that the frontier of truth lies beyond them. So one who sets out to measure the greatness of the renounced ends not as a measurer but as one filled with wonder.

The message of the tale is this: the depth of a renunciant's life will not fit our yardstick. For Valluvar's likeness 'like counting the dead', it is a Puranic picture.
