Explanation

Commentators give different readings of 'irumai'. Parimelazhagar takes it as this life and the next; others take it as attachment and detachment, and still others as rebirth and liberation. Whichever reading is adopted, the verse is clearly about those who compared two ways of life with care and arrived at clarity. The words 'vagai therindhu' show the delicacy of that inquiry: comparing the two takes attention and knowledge.

The phrase that follows, 'eendu aram poondaar', is very beautiful. 'Eendu' means here, now. Virtue is not something to be done far away or in the future; it must begin right now, in this very life. 'Poondaar' carries the sense of putting on an ornament, one who has worn virtue. For them virtue is no mere decoration but becomes their very nature.

The last line, 'perumai pirangitru ulagu', says that the world shines with their greatness. As a lamp brightens an entire room with its light, a pure life becomes a light for a whole society. Even after the wise have passed away, their memory guides generations.

Often today we postpone good deeds with 'let us see later'. This verse gently resists that delay. One who has discerned what lasts from what does not will not wait but will begin today, and through such a person society takes light.

A story

The Clarity of Nachiketa

From the Katha Upanishad. The sage Vajashravasa, in a sacrifice, resolved to give away all his wealth. But the cows he gave were old and had no milk. His young son Nachiketa was troubled to see this. "Father, to whom will you give me?" he asked. When he asked again and again, his father grew angry and said, "I give you to Yama!"

Nachiketa reached the world of Yama. Yama was not there, and for three days the boy waited at the door without food. When Yama returned and learned of it, he was sorry. "Young brahmin, you waited three days hungry. For my fault I grant you three boons," he said.

For the first boon, Nachiketa asked that his father's anger toward him be calmed and that he receive him warmly. For the second, he asked the secret of the sacrificial fire. For the third, he asked, "When a man dies, does he exist or not?" Yama hesitated, saying this boon was very hard.

Yama tempted him: "Ask for sons and grandsons who live a hundred years, elephants, horses, gold, a long life, land, a fine chariot with music and women. But do not ask about death." Nachiketa answered calmly, "Yama, these things are uncertain tomorrow and wear down the power of the senses. Even a long life is short before you. Grant me only what I asked."

Pleased by his firmness, Yama began to teach: the good is one thing and the pleasant another; the wise choose the good and the unwise choose the pleasant. He went on to teach the imperishable nature of the Self. The Upanishad shines with the greatness of a boy who weighed this world and the next and chose rightly.
