Explanation

Two words are key in this verse: 'niraimozhi' and 'maraimozhi'. 'Niraimozhi' is the true speech that comes to pass exactly as spoken, and people of such speech are 'niraimozhi maandhar'. 'Maraimozhi' is the hidden or sacred word, a mantra, a Vedic utterance, or a word of deep meaning. These maraimozhi, Valluvar says, will show to the world the greatness of such persons.

Traditional commentators take 'maraimozhi' in two ways: as mantras or as scriptures. If mantras, the power of the ascetic's speech is known through the things that happened in the world. If scriptures, the profound utterances they wrote down are the evidence of their greatness. Either way, the power of the word is the mark of greatness.

The subtle lesson is that the power of the word comes from the purity of the speaker's life. For someone's word to be fulfilled, there must be no gap between their word and their deed. One who has spoken the truth, done the truth and lived the truth finds weight in his word automatically. That is why a single line of the wise lasts beyond time.

Today we speak promises and words easily. Millions of words fly daily on social media, but how many stand as 'niraimozhi'? Thinking before speaking, and doing what was said, gives weight to our words. That is the simple practice this verse gives.

A story

The Word 'Mara, Mara'

From the traditional account of the origin of the Ramayana. Ratnakara was a highway robber in the forest. Tradition says he lived by robbing travellers in order to support his family. One day the Seven Sages came that way, and he stopped them.

The sages asked him, "Will your family share the fruit of the sin you are committing? Go and ask them." Ratnakara went home and asked his wife, father and mother. They refused: "To feed us is your duty; the sin is yours." His heart broke. He came back and fell at the feet of the sages.

The sages tried to teach him the name of Rama. But his tongue, heavy with sinful thoughts, could not say the holy word. They gave him an easier way: "Say 'mara, mara'." He sat and repeated it for years. Said again and again, 'mara' turned into 'rama, rama'.

As he sat deep in penance, an anthill grew around him and covered him. The anthill is called 'valmika'. Emerging from it he received the name Valmiki. Later, the tradition says, he heard the story of Rama from Narada and, by the grace of Brahma, composed the Ramayana.

Later, the sage Valmiki saw a scene on the bank of the Ganga. A hunter shot one of a pair of krauncha birds with an arrow. In his grief, words with rhythm came from his mouth without his knowing; that, says tradition, was the first shloka. A word born of sorrow opened the way for an epic.

In this episode we see the power of a single word, which turned a robber into a sage. The word that purified one life became, through Valmiki, an epic that still guides millions. It is an illustration of what Valluvar means when he says that the sacred utterance will show their greatness.
